Book Description

A Western medical doctor reveals how and why acupuncture really works

Acupuncture, once considered a fringe alternative, is quickly becoming part of mainstream American medicine. Recent scientific studies have recommended the procedure as a safe and effective treatment for myriad health conditions--from asthma to tennis elbow.

Now Dr. Glenn S. Rothfeld shares the firsthand experiences of patients who have successfully merged acupuncture into their regular medical treatment plans and explores the research that helps prove that it works.

Topics include:

  • Making acupuncture part of a total health care plan
  • Finding a qualified acupuncturist
  • Obtaining insurance coverage
  • Knowing what to expect in a first visit to an acupuncturist
  • Learning which diseases and conditions acupuncture may help improve

This review is from: The Acupuncture Response : Balance Energy and Restore Health--A Western Doctor Tells You How (Paperback)
This was one of very few books about acupuncture that I was able to find at a major library in Florida...and the only one I found helpful. Several book stores I visited had no books on acupuncture. This book is well written, easy to understand and fairly diverse...although it did not include a chart of meridians...you'll find it helpful to have that on hand and there are several free downloadable sources on-line. The book starts with 78 pages of acupuncture history and general knowledge. Following are 87 pages about the Five-Elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water) which I found to be the most valuable part of the book; it included recommendations for balancing with specific acupuncture points, herbs, meditation, exercise and eating advice. The final 33 pages cover "How Acupuncture Can Work For You" and includes resources for additional information. This book is written by an American medical doctor who has studied acupuncture and Chinese medicine extensively. He practices both Western and Eastern medicine. His anonoymous patient stories help in describing his points and are what pull it all together and set this book apart. A "must read" for anyone interested in acupuncture!
