5.0 out of 5 stars Best Resource for Studying for the Certification Exam.
I've used this book twice as a study aid for the certification exam. I thought it was very useful the first time I took the test.

I now had to re-certify by exam (5 years later) and decided to use this book (and the CD) as my primary resource, and boy did that strategy pay off. The language (unlike other resources I used) is similar to that used on the exam,...

The book was a good collection of test questions. However, it did not give explaination to the correct answer, and somw of the question are repeats. If I could use the book over again, I would have done the review test on the CD first--then review the sections in the book. The questions were also harder than the actual exam. 5.0 out of 5 stars Best Resource for Studying for the Certification Exam., May 23, 2007

I've used this book twice as a study aid for the certification exam. I thought it was very useful the first time I took the test.

I now had to re-certify by exam (5 years later) and decided to use this book (and the CD) as my primary resource, and boy did that strategy pay off. The language (unlike other resources I used) is similar to that used on the exam, and the random mix of questions was also similar, so I was able to identify my areas of weakness.

It helps to take sample exams repeatedly to build up the mental stamina required for the actual test.

All in all, I would highly recommend this book for potential certification exam candidates.

4.0 out of 5 stars A must-have for the ACNP candidate, April 25, 2003

This review book reminds me of the NCLEX reviews. It is concise, divides the questions into the key content areas and provides answers with the rationale.

Of particular help is the second chapter "Test-taking skills and designing your study plan". Here the authors give you seven strategies for test-taking. Included are the points "Understanding and analyzing the anatomy of a test question" and the ever helpful "Selecting the best answer when you do not know the answer". There is an analysis of learning styles and an example schedule for preparation.

This review has been very helpful in lowering my test anxiety while in school. Too bad Amazon won't package it with Gawlinski and Hamwi at a reduced price ;-) ;-) This one really complements G&H. I can't give it 5 stars until I take the certification exam!

If I could use the book over again, I would have done the review test on the CD first--then review the sections in the book. The questions were also harder than the actual exam. When I talked with professionals at the ANCC, they said if you are getting >60% on the exams in the book, you will do fine. Happy studying!

2.0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money, March 13, 2009
This review is from: Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Certification Examination: Review Questions and Strategies (Paperback)
This book is seriously overpriced and very poorly written. Yes, the quetions are hard and do challenge you to think. But the reason they are hard is because they are very poorly written. I found several mistakes in her answers section, and many questions were written with important information left out that would never occur on the actual exam. Some of her explanations in fact were just plain wrong. My husband is a physician, and he agreed that this book is not accurately written to reflect the actual information needed for the ACNP exam. When I took my exam, there was not a single question on it that reflected anything I learned from this book. I would never use this book again. If you want an awesome review for the boards, take the Barkley & Associates class, or buy the CDs with his notebook. He is thorough, concise, and extremely intelligent and well spoken. Dr. Barkley is an excellent teacher, and is dead-on when it comes to details you must know to pass boards. I had question after question on my boards that came straight from information that Dr. Barkley teaches in his class. I passed my boards thanks to Dr. Barkley, not Barbara Todd!!

I heard a lot of feedback from my classmates and professors about the toughness of this book. I used it for my ACNP exam preparation, and without a doubt, it is a tough book. However, this book make me realize the weakness areas of my knowledge base, so that I can focus on those area during the exam preapration. I feel more comfortable to take the exam after I utilized this book. I am so glad I passed my exam at the first time.

2.0 out of 5 stars tough but poorly written, March 20, 2011
This review is from: Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Certification Examination: Review Questions and Strategies (Paperback)
I just passed the ACNP exam and used this book as a question bank in addition to the Fitzgerald review course CDs. I would have appreciated more full exams, there are only two 150 question exams, the rest are subject specific. The questions are tough (which is good for mastery) and some are a bit outdated now but my biggest complaint is that the book is poorly written. My husband (a Resident) was helping quiz me and there were several questions that we found the answers to be quite ambiguous or just plain wrong. Additionally the explanation for correct answers is often lacking, not providing rationale for why other answer choices were not correct. Use with caution, this book is good to really drill specific subjects rather than whole tests but watch out for inaccurate answers.
