This review is from: Ad Astra Per Aspera (Audio CD)
Kevin Richey ditches the sitar and exotic influences this time out, in favor of a more straight-ahead country rock sound. That the man known as Bingo writes and sings more convincingly than his aspiring alt-country kin is what makes this album better than 90% of what gets reviewed in No Depression. Richey's covers of Dock Boggs, The Holy Modal Rounders, Elizabeth Cotten and Stephen Foster are top-drawer, too. More banjo would have earned Bingo that fifth star. Fans of the legendary Michael Hurley would be well served to fess up their credit cards for this one.
