5.0 out of 5 stars Magical performances of an important Victoria find October 30, 2010
Format:Audio CD
If 'world premiere' recordings of music by lesser-known Renaissance composers still seem reasonably commonplace these days, those which can make such a claim for figures as crucial as Tomás Luis de Victoria (c.1548-1611) are rare indeed. Thus, the release of a CD dedicated to Victoria's psalms in 'manuscrito 130' (of the Biblioteca Nazionale Vittorio Emmanuele II, Rome), discovered by chance in 1975 and as of now still unperformed in modern times, is already extremely significant; that they are also performed to such a high standard by one of the best vocal ensembles currently specialising in Spanish Renaissance music merely makes this recording even more desirable. If you are interested in Renaissance music - and even more so if Iberian repertoire interests you - and you haven't encountered La Colombina before, they are definitely worth investigating! Especially fine, in my view, are their recent recordings of Victoria: Officium Hebdomadæ Sanctæ and their overview of music by Guerrero (entitled

I greatly appreciate the excellent and detailed review by 'Evil' - I agree this is a terrific release of 'new' Victoria material. The singing is superb and I am a 'convert' as well and plan to purchase other releases by this outstanding ensemble. Don't miss it.
