Editorial Reviews

Review

From the reviews of the second edition: “The text covers all of the main parts of Ada that an experienced programmer will be looking to understand … .The examples are generally quite good and well formatted … . This book would probably be a good fit for someone who is experienced both in programming and in reading specifications, who already knows … Ada to write simple programs and who has a copy of the Ada Reference Manual at hand to look things up as required.” (Jeffery Putnam, ACM Computing Reviews, February, 2009) --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

If you are trying to learn Ada - do not get this book. It would be like trying to learn the language from the compiler specification. It has some decent comparisons between the different language versions like 83/95/2005. The examples that come with the book are probably its best asset, available from the publisher here: <...>

If you enjoy reading legal documents (what Ada programmer doesn't), you may like this book. A random excerpt, "The prefix must be of a specific or class-wide tagged type; in this case, Event_Queue.Get(Q) is of type Event'Class. The selector must denote a primitive or class-wide operation for the tagged type whose first parameter is of this type..."

On the plus side, it has little sections like this (Ada 95), "Interfaces are new in Ada 2005. Generics can be used for MI as shown in Sections 17.5-17.6."

If you have the time to explore every section in great detail, than this book can serve as a guide through the language. However, if you are looking for a more tutorial/how to style book to hold your hand in improving your Ada software, I would advise to look elsewhere.

If you are new to the ADA language stay away from this book. I have been programming for over 30 years and this is the worst language book I have ever come across. Being new to ADA myself I tried looking up things like how to use 'if' or using 'files' and they are not even listed in the index. The author explicitly states that syntax and semantics are not important?????? If your an ADA expert maybe you can use this book for something. For me it is useless and a complete waste of money. I got ripped-off, don't let it happen to you.
