New packaging imparts a gross musky smell and taste to tea,
This review is from: Adagio Teas Paper Filters (Kitchen)
EDIT: As this is the highest ranked _negative_ review, I am editing this to add one more point. While this product has good average review, buyers should keep in mind that most of the recent reviews have been very negative. To me, this implies two things:1) Adagio's change of ingredients (see below) is permanent, and utterly disgusting tasting 2) Adagio doesn't care enough to respond to these comments and change back to whatever they were selling before. They choose to continue fooling buyers that it is the same old product from before that previous buyers purchased. THIS IS NOT A ONE-OFF PROBLEM, IT IS PERMANENT. Original review follows: ___ I have used these in the past, and have been happy with them. When I ran out, I bought 5 more boxes. However, the box I received was different from the previous one - it didn't have "hemp" as an ingredient any more. (Adagio's image on this website is therefore misleading!) The one box I opened imparted a terrible musky smell and taste to the tea, which makes the tea impossible to drink. I contacted Adagio about this, (via their website) but they refused to acknowledge the problem. I was also asked to try it without tea - just pour hot water over it, and I can confirm that the tea bag changes the taste of the plain water. It adds a taste that is similar to chewing on wood chips or wheat chaff. Unacceptable. Perhaps it affects only a certain production run, but my experience was bad. Worse of course was Adagio's 'customer support' that, I think, believes I am making this up. Shame that Adagio had to go and ruin a good product. I have switched to T Sacs. A bit more expensive, but better than wasting money on bad products!

I admit it, I'm a tea snob. I like a wide variety of teas, but most of my favorites come loose, which I find annoying since I like to grab and go.These unbleached tea filters (made with hemp and wood fibers) allow me to enjoy my favorite teas without fiddling with strainers and such. I don't staple them shut or anything - I just fill them with a good amount of tea for my serving size (they are roomy enough for 1-8 servings depending on the tea), fold over the top flap and tuck it into the pocket where the tea goes, and microwave it in my cup of water. I expected to have to do something to hold the top closed, but the teabag rarely leaks out of that top flap. Every so often a leaf or two will escape, but it's not a big enough deal to actually mess with it. I love that I can pre-load them with loose tea so I can grab them and take them on the go. These are well worth the price and save me a lot of money, since a lot of loose teas, especially at ethnic or very high-end shops, are cheaper than bagged. One thing - I was surprised at the size of these filters. I had been used to T-sac filters and Teavana filters which were about 2" by 4". These filters are about 3" by 7". They work just as well for single-serve as the smaller ones, and these also give you the option of making a larger batch of tea, which I appreciate. Since they are the same price per filter as the smaller ones, I like that I can choose to use them for different serving sizes.

Smells,

These are absolutely terrible. First one I put in the cup smelled awful. Stay away. I read all the reviews, and figured they might have gotten a few bad batches, after all, it did get great reviews over all. But the smell is terrible after you put it in the hot water.

Ambivalent,

I, too, have gotten some bad tasting/smelling tea bags after loving the ones bought previously from Adagio. The cost is much cheaper if you get the filters from Adagio directly, but I'm not sure I want to risk more bad ones.

I couldn't be happier with these tea filters - they are a perfect way to enjoy your favorite loose teas. I recently bought a bunch of loose tea from Teavana, which wasn't working out so well in my metal tea strainer - the leaves and bits kept falling out, and using it was really quite the pain. However, these tea filters are incredibly simple and easy to use. Now I can bring my loose teas to work (or anywhere else!) without the hassle of a metal tea strainer. Disposal of used tea leaves is extremely convenient. These tea filters are large, which is great for one serving or many more servings. Because the top of the filter doesn't close, you'd think that the tea would spill out into the water, but it doesn't (due to the filter size). This also allows the tea to spread out inside the bag, and really release their full flavor. I would recommend this product to anyone!

Funky Smell,
This review is from: Adagio Teas Paper Filters (Kitchen)
I've used maybe 8 of these filters and half of them have had a really bad smell and taste to them. I was hoping it was just one bad one, but after getting 4 bad ones I'm afraid to keep trying more and waste my loose leaf. The smell reminds me of rancid milk and it makes the water/tea taste bad also. I've seen a few people have gotten ones with this problem, so I don't think it's worth the risk. They are also ~$3 on the Adagio Teas website, where it may also be easier to get your money back if you have a similar experience.

Tea Filters/Bags,

I've been looking for filters/bags to use with my loose tea leaves. I prefer making one cup at a time so these bags are a little bigger than I'd like. They do a good job of filtering the tea and I'd recommend them for serious tea drinkers.

I have been using this product for over a year now. It used to be a great experience. However, I bought a new pack in Sep 2011. This new patch has a very odd smell/flavor. It ruins the tea. I will keep my eyes open for new reviews coming in. Unless they solve this problem in the next patch, I will stop using this product.BTW, I notice similar comments at Adagio own website regarding this product.

This gets to be the first item I've ever returned to Amazon - gave it a few tries but couldn't get past the extra flavor it adds. It's definitely not "taste-neutral" like it claims to be! Very heavy cardboard/paper taste.

I use Lipton Loose Tea along w/ green tea to make a large pitcher of tea (almost a gallon). These bags are larger than the pre-filled single cup tea bags & family-size tea bags. However I still use two to split the amount of loose tea I use to make a full pitcher. The bags are long & stick above the top of my ceramic teapot quite nicely. Thus, avoiding spillage into the brew water. I highly recommend these filters. |
