Product Description

The Adam Equipment MXB 20 baby scale has a capacity of 20kg and an accuracy of 10g (also called readability), and lightweight, solid, ABS-plastic construction that easily wipes clean. A contoured weighing area securely cradles the subject and helps divert small spills, while the three-second settling time enables fast and accurate readings of moving subjects. The scale can be operated using AC power, or four standard AA batteries, for full mobility in the field and when a power supply is hard to find. The auto off function can be enabled to power off the scale automatically after periods of inactivity to conserve power. This scale has an automatic external calibration system and requires a 20kg weight for calibration.

The scale measures in grams, pounds, and pounds-and-ounces. Applications include weighing and dynamic weighing. The hold function freezes the weight measurement on the display for up to ten seconds, for recording weight measurements or tending to the subject. A measuring tape is included for comprehensive physical assessment of the subject.

Scales and balances are measuring instruments used to determine the mass of an object. Mechanical balances are the simplest type of balance, and use a lever and slide to indicate the measurement. Conventional balances are commonly used in offices, the jewelry industry, and in kitchens, and display results digitally, but are less precise than analytical balances. Analytical balances measure to a high degree of precision and accuracy (0.0001g or better), and display results digitally. These balances have a cover with doors to prevent dust and airflow from affecting the measurement. Moisture balances analyze moisture content in a material sample, using infrared or halogen heat sources to dry the sample and then calculate the moisture content from the before- and after-drying weight, and display results digitally, on the balance, or transfer the information for display on a computer.

Adam Equipment manufactures balances, scales, and related accessories for laboratory, educational, industrial, retail, and medical applications. The company, which was founded in the United Kingdom in 1972 and has an office in Danbury, CT, meets International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 9001:2008 standards.

This scale is fairly solid and seems reliable but there was one problem with it. To calibrate it before initial use a weight of 20kg (has to be exact) is required and this is not provided with the scale. Obtaining an accurate 20Kg weight turned out to be essentailly impossibe unless one were willing to deal with a refgerence lab and pay big $$$. When I spoke to the manufacturer, I was glibly told that, yes, correct use of the scale required such a precise reference weight but that it has to be obtained eslewhere.

Since we were primarily using the scale to measure change of weight, we were able to get the information we needed but I think the ad for the scale needs to mention the need of a reference weight for calibration.
