Very good music by the composer of Giselle.,
By D. R. Schryer (Poquoson, VA United States) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (TOP 1000 REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Adam: La Filleule des Fées (Complete Ballet) (Audio CD)
The second quarter of the 19th century is particularly interesting because it marked a blending of the Classical and Romantic periods. The vestiges of Classicism gave a special charm to the early Romanticism which dominated this period. It this period which produced the great bel canto operas of Donizetti and Bellini and the piano music of Chopin. In this special period Adam wrote a number of charming ballets, the greastest of which -- and, indeed, the first truly great ballet -- was Giselle. Although La Filleule des Fees is not the masterpiece that Giselle is (but then very few other ballets are on a par with Giselle) it is a very charming ballet, ably conducted by Andrew Mogrelia -- who appears to be have a particular affinity for Adam's music. If you like this type of music don't pass up this 2-CD set

Who is le comte de Saint-Julien?,
This review is from: Adam: La Filleule des Fées (Complete Ballet) (Audio CD)
It's a shame that some artists are remembered for one work when some other works would suffice to keep them before the public. Novelist James T Farrell said he regretted writing "Studs Lonigan" because it was all people knew of him. He felt he'd written better stuff but that it languished because of "Studs". If all you know of Adolphe Adam (1803-1856) is his "Giselle", give this ballet a try. "The Faries' God-Daughter", as the title translates, was staged in 1849 after Adam was bankrupted by the Revolution of 1848. This is my favorite Adam. The set consists of 2 CD's and runs just over 2 hours. What puzzles me is that it was written "with Alfred, Comte de Saint-Julien". I haven't been able to find out anything about this person. I'd like to know which parts of "La Filleule" are his and which are Adam's. If you know anything about him, please create a little review of your own and tell us. Thanks.
