Great Book,
This review is from: A Is for Adam: The Gospel from Genesis (Hardcover)
First, a word to the negative reviewers.
I'm reminded of a quote I heard a few years ago, on another topic, but it fits very well here - "everyone is entitled to their own opinion, as long as it's exactly the same as my own." I don't know how the authors could have made it any more obvious on the front cover that this book was written from a Christian point of view. You were fairly warned, so why did you even read it if you're going to be so shocked and offended at any mention of Christian ideas? I've read books on evolution, but I've never given a poor review to any of them based solely on the fact that the author doesn't believe the same thing I do, let alone such insulting and hate filled comments I've seen for nearly every review I've read for books with a creationist viewpoint. On to the book... I thought it was very well written. The illustrations were nicely done, and I loved the little dodo bird with his comments throughout the book. Part two is the section for parents and older children that serves as sort of a mini-commentary on the first eleven chapters of the book of Genesis. Part three is a repeat of part one, with the pictures in black and white, meant to be used as a coloring book.

This is the best book that summarizes the whole Bible. It makes the Bible clear to young children and adults alike! It is a great book to keep for many years. The back of the book tells you how to make it more interesting and more informative for the older children. My 4 year old loves it and I am learning things from it too! This book is also great for a series of Sunday School lessons.

My boys love this book (and the video). Leans toword Arminianism and pre-millennialism, but otherwise complete sound. Christian world view was never this fun and simple!

I just got my order from Amazon for the many books I have purchased to begin our homeschooling journey. I am so impressed with this book, it is beautifully illustrated and wonderfully compiled.
The pictures are colorful and fun. It is set up in a format that is so user (and kid) friendly. The first half of the book has the colorful pictures with each letter of the alphabet identifying a concept of truth about our Creator and creation. Each letter is set to a tune so that it can be easily memorized. The second half of the book is dedicated to detail the concept connected to each letter, apply it to the lesson and provide a student activity. I am excited to use this resource and I think the kids will enjoy it as well. A caution: This book is from a Christian perspective and follows the belief of Creation, if you believe evolution is the means of our existence I do not believe you would enjoy this product.

Fantastic Book!,

This beautifully illustrated hard cover children's book is one of our all-time favorites. We have read it dozens of time, we know most if it by heart (from watching the DVD as well). Beautiful color, very real pictures. My favorite thing, besides the fact that it is very Bible-based and TRUE, is that the rhymes are so fun and catchy and flow so well that they really keep a child's interest. The story behind the beautiful pictures and adorable rhymes is great for adults to learn too! I HIGHLY recommend this book and I have given it out as gifts to others. If you're trying to decide between getting the book or the DVD, get the book. The DVD is a little outdated and slower paced (but we still really like it).

Not happy with the black and white pages. Wish it was in color like the actual book. My daughter lost interest in the Kindle version.

More ham-handed nonsense from the Hams,
By
This review is from: A Is for Adam: The Gospel from Genesis (Hardcover)
If it weren't for its anti-science agenda, "A is for Adam" would be a well-put-together piece of work. The illustrations by Dan Lietha are colorful, comical and engaging. The writing is simple and straightforward.
But the agenda! Interspersed with a rather straight telling of the story of the Garden of Eden are some real howlers. The biblical Behemoth was a dinosaur; dodos, dinosaurs, mammoths and humans lived together on Noah's Ark; brothers and sisters (Adam and Eve's children) could marry licitly (though without scriptural attestation) in the early days of humanity. Every fact is arrayed carefully to "explain" some problem with a literalist view of Scripture. I will give Ham credit for including a four-legged snake (as clearly implied by Genesis) as the tempter of Eve. The back of the book includes black-and-white outlines of the book's illustrations, perfect for photocopying for Sunday School coloring. There is also a parent and teacher section that lays out the basis for Ham's odd assertions. Dog breeds, he insists, are not due to evolution, but to the fact that God put lots of information into dog genes. Ham thus believes in genes, but evidently not in the mutability that gave rise to the breeds, or the odd fact that the various dog breeds have almost identical genes. There is something unseemly in efforts to co-opt some parts of science while denying other aspects that are less comforting, but just as reliable. Like Ham's "D is for Dinosaur," this book is an attempt to uphold the literalist interpretation of the Bible. While many other denominations have made peace with the truth of science, there's a minority of humanity that will continue rejecting the evidence of their eyes. This, sadly, they consider "faith." Ham's purpose is to placate this minority and give it "evidence" for continuing its willful blindness. The question is whether this is the reason that God give us brains. |
