Best affordable RAID Controller,
By ND4SPD "IT Technician" (Florida, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Adaptec 2170500-R Serial ATA II RAID 1420SA 4-Port Controller (Personal Computers)
Absolutely amazing RAID card!!! Just one thing to keep in mind if you plan to use it with HDD's which are not designed specifically for a RAID setup, (and even those which are) --> Be sure you know about Time-Limited Error Recovery (TLER) - (Error Recovery Fallout Prevention) and BE SURE TO ENABLE IT if your drive comes from the factory with it disabled. This will prevent the drive from dropping from the RAID. (Most drives will have TLER DISABLED from the OEM / FACTORY because drives are designed to connect to a computer without a RAID card)
[...] How do you enable TLER? Use the Western Digital Utility called WDTLER which comes with five (5) files, HDACCESS.EXE, TLER-OFF.bat, TLER-ON.bat, TLERscan.bat, and WDTLER.EXE //// You can get it from Western Digital, or search online for WDTLER.zip and for helpful info how to use it, search online, or just read below: You can not turn on TLER through the RAID card. You have to connect both drives directly to the motherboard. Then boot from a MS-DOS bootable floppy disk (you can create one in Windows if you don't have one), run the TLERscan.bat to see if TLER is disabled, (it probably will be) and then run TLER-ON.BAT which will turn TLER on for BOTH drives. MAKE sure ALL other hard drives are disconnected though!!! Because all drives that are detected will have the firmware modified to have TLER enabled, and you ONLY want TLER enabled for the drives which will be connecting to the RAID card for RAID USE ONLY.
