I've bought two of these to get some use out of the older, smaller hard drives from my laptop, and now my wife's MacBook. It works well either way, and was up and running in a matter of minutes. For less than the cost of a "fancy" external drive, you can buy this, and a new internal drive, and accomplish the same thing.

Keep in mind that this model is IDE only, so if you have a newer laptop that you are thinking of upgrading, I'd search out "SATA Enclosure" to find one that will work with the drive that is probably in there. If you are unsure as to whether you have IDE or SATA, you can either check your specs, or run a free application called SIW (System Information for Windows), and look under the hardware section. Delivery was prompt but when I received the enclosure, I found my old Dell laptop hard drive was not compatible with it. Baffled, I began a series of emails with the distributor who was always very eager and quick to help. As a person with mild computer aptitude, they explained that Dell often put adapters on their hard drives in order to work with their systems. They told me how to remove it and the hard drive in the new enclosure works great! I would have been sunk without Genioworx's immediate help.

I didn't know a gadget such as this even existed until I ran into it by accident at a retail store. I had been trying to figure out how I was going to get data out of my old Dell notebook that had a fried motherboard. This gizmo saved me headaches and possibly more money. It makes a fine backup drive now, but only a net 11 gigs. I picked up a Simpletech 40 gig USB external. I used it twice in the last six months to back up my Toshiba notebook, and it's dead. After hearing similar reviews about similar devices made by all sorts of manufacturers, I decided to pick up a 2.5" internal drive and buy a second Adaptec enclosure.

I salvaged two drives from my old laptop, plugged them in and was able to reformat them easily.

No problems. good transfer rate. Well made and no external power source needed (as long as you plug into a USB port on your computer - not a hub).

I bought this to rescue my old laptop's hard drive. Instructions are extremely simple, and only require the drive and a Phillips-head screwdriver. This thing needs the power from two USB ports, so plug the cable into the computer before you plug it into the drive.

It works perfectly under Ubuntu 7.10, and allowed me to see and mount all the partitions on the drive as if they were separate removable drives. I'm getting something like 8 MB/sec transfer speeds off it now with USB 2.0.

One reassuring note: The instructions say "A new disk drive must be formatted before use. Refer to your operating system documentation for instructions", but any drive that already HAS data on it has already been formatted.

All in all, I'm very pleased thus far.

Works and looks great... owned it for about six months and haven't had any issues.

I have this enclosure and other brand. the other one works fine every time. The Adaptec doesn't recognize by the computer. I checked everything, and it is still not recognized.

Nothing fancy here, just a standard Hard Drive Enclosure from a reliable brand name (Adaptec). Usually reliable, anyway - my first enclosure was defective, but the seller was great and sent a free replacement, which worked just fine. All you need to do is unscrew the enclosure, pop in your hard drive (only fits one way), screw it back together, hook up the cable (you need to use BOTH USB plugs in order to provide a stable power supply for the device), and away you go! I was pretty happy to recover files from a laptop hard drive that I *thought* had crashed completely, but works just fine as a "slave" rather than a "master" drive.

I bought this item to retrieve some data off my hard drive after my laptop died. Installation was very quick and simple, just slide out the hard drive, remove the sleeve, and slide it into the new case. Case feels sturdy and compact, with clean lines and a brushed aluminum finish. Also comes with a leather case for added protection.
