Book Description

Columbia History of Urban Life April 15, 1992

Between 1880 and 1914, Eastern European Jewish immigrants in New York's Lower East Side defined themselves as American not only by their occupations or education but by their spending practices as well. Jewish immigrants assimilated into American culture through the purchase of fashions, material goods, and resort vacations, combined with Jewish social and religious traditions to create a unique and innovative American identity.

Editorial Reviews

Review

A very important book... at the cutting edge of what should be an exciting new scholarly development... opening up whole areas of behavior which [historians] previously shrugged off as irrelevant.

(Journal of American Ethnic History )

Well written... creative in its use of a wide range of primary source material.

(Canadian Review of American Studies )

Raises interesting questions about the immigrant experience in a gracefully written style.

(Journal of Consumer Affairs )

An important book that invites reflection upon the national character.

(American Jewish Archives )

5.0 out of 5 stars Really original research! A classic., November 10, 1999
This review is from: Adapting to Abundance (Paperback)
I am a history teacher, a Jew, and a woman. This book showed a real respect and understanding of the Jewish women's role in the history of American culture. My grandmother also loves it.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is amazing! It was THE book in my history class., October 21, 1999

This review is from: Adapting to Abundance (Paperback)
This book was a genuinely original piece of research. I loved it. You can learn about Jews, about consumption, and about America. I was lucky enough to hear Dr. Heinze speak a few years ago on Jewish Women in America, and he (unlike many other writers on the subject) really understands the role of Jewish women - yesterday and today.
