Book Description

December 1, 2006
Quilt block designs and pieced top patterns lend themselves beautifully to millefiore cane making and other techniques used in polymer clay. Well-known polymer clay artists Judith Skinner (creator of the "Skinner Blend")and Sarajane Helm bring you this new 122 page full color book filled with gorgeous pictures and clear instructions. The authors show how to create amazing quilt patterns in polymer clay! Many block patterns are shown including Amish Bars, Log Cabin Variations, Nine Patch, Drunkard's Path and more. Colorful oven-cured polymer clay is used to create jewelry, miniatures, decorative items and more. The Gallery section includes the work of many other polymer clay artisans. As an exploration of color and pattern that goes far beyond the basic how-to, this book can be enjoyed on many levels.

More About the Author

Sarajane Helm began making dolls and dressing them when she was a very young girl...the skills learned in drawing and sewing for dolls translated into a love of character and costume. She studied theater arts at Barat College and theatrical design at Ohio State University and Media Graphic Design at Front Range Community College.

Since 1978, she has designed and sold dolls and wearable art in many forms, utilizing her skills with fabric and fibers, polymer clay, paper and multimedia works. She designs rubber stamps and textile prints, dyes and embellishes fabrics, draws paper dolls and coloring books and designs web sites. Her work appears in magazine articles for Bead & Button, Jewelry Crafts, DOLLS, Lapidary Journal and others. In addition to serving as the Polymer Clay Editorial Advisor for Belle Armoire Magazine, she wrote a bi-monthly column that ran there for five years about the business of selling wearable art. These were recently compiled into a new book "The Business Of Professional Art".

Her books "Create A Polymer Clay Impression" and "Celebrations With Polymer Clay" continue to be well received and respected as being both beautiful and brimming with information. "Adapting Quilt Patterns To Polymer Clay" is co-authored with Judith Skinner, who's "Skinner Blend" technique has changed the look of polymer clay art throughout the world.

Sarajane is a founding member of the San Diego Polymer Clay Guild, and of the Rocky Mountain Polymer Clay Guild (which is now three grown to three groups- the Rocky Mountain Polymer Clay Guild in Ft. Collins, Colorado, Denver's Mile High Polymer Clay Guild and the Pikes Peak Polymer Clay Guild in Colorado Springs).

She works to explore and promote the many possibilities of the medium and to nurture creativity in others. She served for several years as Vice President of Membership for the National Polymer Clay Guild and continues to help organize an annual polymer clay retreat with the Rocky Mountain Polymer Clay Network.

In addition to these PC groups, Sarajane is a member of the Rocky Mountain Bead Society. She and her husband collaborate on their larger pieces, and the entire family gets involved in the pursuit of business and art. Together they have created mosaic pieces for private collections, for gallery sales and for the benefit of local community organizations.

As part of the Artist In Residence program in 2005, Sarajane worked with hundreds of local elementary school children to create a polymer clay installation and promote the use of creative skills. By continuing to educate herself and sharing what she knows with others throughout the years, Sarajane has acquired many skills that she enjoys honing through use. She travels throughout the United States to instruct people of many ages and skill levels in classes and seminars on subjects including fabric decoration, mask making and costuming, dolls and miniature making, beads making and use, and about polymer clay in all its many potential applications.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome book!, October 19, 2009

This review is from: Adapting Quilt Patterns to Polymer Clay (Paperback)
I've had this book for over a year and have created several of the complex canes detailed within. The directions are explicit, complete and illustrated and creating the canes has proven to be quite easy with the directions provided. I wouldn't recommend this book to a newbie but you also don't have to be advanced to create the canes described.

5.0 out of 5 stars wonderful guide for clayers, October 19, 2009
This review is from: Adapting Quilt Patterns to Polymer Clay (Paperback)
I love this book, and the authors. I don't get the comments of the 1st reviewer, as I found it to be extremely informative and helpful. I am not a quilter, so I needed lots of help and guidance, and I found the step by step instructions to be wonderful! Sarajane, and Judith put clay in reach to everyone! thank you for this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Polymer clay must have for your library, June 7, 2009
This book is fantastic. Anybody who uses polymer clay would benefit from having this book in their library. Step by step illustrations which take away the anxiety of building complex extruded canes. I could NOT live without this book - seriously!
