Actor-director Griffin Dunne made his filmmaking debut with this ethically ambiguous and not-very-funny movie about a pair of jilted lovers (Meg Ryan and Matthew Broderick) who conspire to break up a relationship between their ex-sweethearts (Tchéky Karyo and Kelly Preston). Part classic screwball comedy, part nightmare along the lines of Martin Scorsese's After Hours (in which Dunne starred), part tribute to Hitchcock's Rear Window, Addicted to Love is all over the map and seriously hampered by the sheer, unwarranted nastiness aimed at the innocent characters played by Karyo and Preston. --Tom Keogh

4.0 out of 5 stars The best! The ultimate revenge fantasy!, November 24, 2000
This review is from: Addicted to Love [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I love this movie! Dark comedy at its best. Nice to see Ryan in a not so "Miss Mary Sunshine" role. Broderick was a wooden as ever but likeable nonetheless...especially when he flashes a smug expression reminiscent of those he was famous for in Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

I loved watching the sneaky ex boyfriend get his much deserves comeuppance. You go girl! And there was a happy ending for both couples in the film...a nice was to balance all the dark notes in this comedy. Farafetched? Yes. Something normal people wopuld ever dare attempt? No way--unless they want to end up dead or in jail. But as far as revenge goes this is served up as sweet as pie. The ultimate revenge fantasy...I've seen it 3 times!

4.0 out of 5 stars Dark Comedy in Need of a Few More Laughs, January 5, 2001
This review is from: Addicted to Love (DVD)
Quirky dark comedy, isn't quite successful but tries for something different and nearly succeeds.

It's a comedy about stalking and getting revenge on your ex-lovers. Meg Ryan plays against her type and succeeds with a well cast Mathew Broderick as her accomplice in criminal behavior. Meg Ryan wants revenge on her ex-boyfriend and Broderick wants his ex-girlfriend back. Their exes are dating each other and Ryan and Broderick join forces to stalk their former lovers and in the process get to know each other. There's some real slow parts and the obsessive cruelty of Meg Ryan's character gives things at times too dark an edge-but I appreciate films that don't play it safe like this one.

Don't expect the laughs to be too plentiful and enjoy this quirky film.

It marks the feature film directing debut of actor (After Hours)Griffin Dunne.

If you liked After Hours and King of Comedy, you'll probably enjoy this one a lot.

5.0 out of 5 stars Human, May 30, 2004

I loved this movie. I believe that it reflects the way that these four very different people react to having their hearts broken. It is so easy to judge people based on how they appear and this movie gives us pause. Very few movies can give us such insight without being depressing, yet this one leaves you feeling good.
