4.0 out of 5 stars The best! The ultimate revenge fantasy!
I love this movie! Dark comedy at its best. Nice to see Ryan in a not so "Miss Mary Sunshine" role. Broderick was a wooden as ever but likeable nonetheless...especially when he flashes a smug expression reminiscent of those he was famous for in Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

I loved watching the sneaky ex boyfriend get his much deserves comeuppance. You go girl...

3.0 out of 5 stars True Romance
There's a freshness to Addicted to Love that's long been absent from the romantic comedy genre. It takes a new angle in which paybacks become the ultimate art form of the jilted. I loved watching the sneaky ex boyfriend get his much deserves comeuppance. You go girl! And there was a happy ending for both couples in the film...a nice was to balance all the dark notes in this comedy. Farafetched? Yes. Something normal people wopuld ever dare attempt? No way--unless they want to end up dead or in jail. But as far as revenge goes this is served up as sweet as pie. The ultimate revenge fantasy...I've seen it 3 times!

4.0 out of 5 stars Dark Comedy in Need of a Few More Laughs, January 5, 2001
This review is from: Addicted to Love (DVD)
Quirky dark comedy, isn't quite successful but tries for something different and nearly succeeds.

It's a comedy about stalking and getting revenge on your ex-lovers. Meg Ryan plays against her type and succeeds with a well cast Mathew Broderick as her accomplice in criminal behavior. Meg Ryan wants revenge on her ex-boyfriend and Broderick wants his ex-girlfriend back. Their exes are dating each other and Ryan and Broderick join forces to stalk their former lovers and in the process get to know each other. There's some real slow parts and the obsessive cruelty of Meg Ryan's character gives things at times too dark an edge-but I appreciate films that don't play it safe like this one.

Don't expect the laughs to be too plentiful and enjoy this quirky film.

It marks the feature film directing debut of actor (After Hours)Griffin Dunne.

If you liked After Hours and King of Comedy, you'll probably enjoy this one a lot.

5.0 out of 5 stars Human, May 30, 2004

I loved this movie. I believe that it reflects the way that these four very different people react to having their hearts broken. It is so easy to judge people based on how they appear and this movie gives us pause. Very few movies can give us such insight without being depressing, yet this one leaves you feeling good.

There's a freshness to Addicted to Love that's long been absent from the romantic comedy genre. It takes a new angle in which paybacks become the ultimate art form of the jilted. The genial nature of the four leads keeps it interesting too. Even Ryan--never one of my favorites--is genuinely charming here, in a biker-chick sort of way. The happily ever after comes as expected, but the rocky road that takes us there is pleasantly unpredictable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kind of like a romantic comedy version of the Count of Monte Cristo, June 11, 2011
By
This review is from: Addicted to Love (DVD)
Ever wonder what would happen if somebody combined the Count of Monte Cristo with a chick flick? Probably not, but the result would be something like addicted to love. The plot features Meg Ryan and Matthew Broderick planning to get revenge on their exes. They devise outlandish and creative schemes to ruin their lives. At some points the revenge schemes are just cruel, but usually Addicted to Love is filled with funny jokes and outlandishness. It also has a decent plot arch and doesn't end too early - at the obvious point when most romantic comedies would end - but develops the characters a bit further. I only wish the revenge had been meted out equally to both exes. The guy, Anton, suffers a lot, but the girl, Linda, barely at all. Still, this is a great classic revenge romance and I'd highly recommend it for fans of romantic comedies.

4.0 out of 5 stars Preposterous but catchy in the end., January 16, 2011

This movie is one of those rare movies that starts out horribly and ends well. In the beginning we are introduced to Sam, an astronomer who manages to predict a supernova in another galaxy using a telescope during the day which he then points to the local playground to see his girlfriend. Within about another 2 minutes of screen time she has won a chance to go to New York, has gone there, fallen in love with someone else, dumped him by letter and he has arrived in New York to track her down. However, once these preposterous scenes are over, the movie settles into something a bit more watchable. It does a decent job of striking a balance between some humorous scenes and some with romantic sparks. I like movies in which two people who start out having no attraction end up together. My only complaints about this one are that the movie jumps the gun a bit with the attraction and the romantic payoff at the end is a bit thin and abrupt, but these are very small complaints. Mostly the movie is enjoyable to watch. If you can suspend your disbelief enough to get past some of the scientifically implausible parts and the initial tackiness of the main character, you will most likely find this to be an enjoyable little movie that makes you chuckle some and feel warm at the end.

The plot centers around Sam who is trying to get his girlfriend back and Maggie who is trying to get revenge on her boyfriend who dumped her for Sam's girlfriend. Along the way, a number of stereotypes and some of the addictive aspects of romantic relationships are dismantled until in the end, a hopeful view of true love is presented. The tricks that these two main characters play on their ex lovers provide some laughs, albeit ones that have been done many times before, and their forced co-existence leads to some romantic moments along the way. If all of this sounds like something you've seen before, that's probably because you have, but somehow this movie manages to take many stock romantic movie scenes and situations and assemble them into something a bit different. If you like romantic movies you will probably enjoy checking this one out.

4.0 out of 5 stars Oh so funny!, April 20, 2003
This review is from: Addicted to Love (DVD)
Matthew Broderick as the boy with the beautiful girl he doesn't think he deserves, and Meg Ryan as the girl with the bad boy she shouldn't want. The fun starts when the beautiful girl and the bad boy get together and fall in love. Matthew starts out just wanting to see his former beloved, while Meg has more sinister plans. What happens after that is true comedy. For those of you who find the movie a little farfetched, you're right! Come on, this is a movie! It wouldn't happen in real life, or at least no one would admit to it, but that's what makes it so hillarious. The supporting cast in this one is great, too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Meg and Matthew visit the Dark Side, November 1, 2001

Matthew Broderick and Meg Ryan are gifted comic actors, and they are entertaining in this dark comedy. While the characters begin the movie in a plot for revenge against their former lovers, their ridiculous and immoral plans explode. While the romance makes light of a serious problem (stalking), the movie itself is more sweet than bitter because of the characters' insights, failures, and romance. Neither Broderick's nor Ryan's best film, but definitely enjoyable if you are in the mood for a biting look at love.

3.0 out of 5 stars It's a "French Kiss" remake!!!, April 8, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Addicted to Love [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Think about it. Meg Ryan stars in a film about somebody's fiance going away on what's supposed to be a short trip. Instead, however, the fiance falls in love with a French person and decides to stay. So the other person follows them with the intention of winning them back, enlisting the help of somebody they meet upon arriving, and end up falling in love with that person who helped them! The plot of "French Kiss" or "Addicted to Love"? Try BOTH! And while both films are different in other ways, I still say "French Kiss" is the superior of the two!
