4.0 out of 5 stars Hughes comes out of nowhere with another great release...
You know, it's too bad that Glenn Hughes (former Trapeze and Deep Purple bassist/vocalist) doesn't receive that much attention these days. He's got a better, more soulful and emotion-inflected voice than 95% of other vocalists that are on the airwaves at the moment. Not only that, but his lyrics are better and more meaningful. Whatever, let most the public be...

2.0 out of 5 stars Too metallic, too aggressive, too modern...
This is very metallic and aggressive, but not in the same musical vein as Slipknot or even the modern Judas Priest. Personally I'm not too happy with this rather hard and heavy low-key direction, and I believe that both the earlier "From now on" and the more recent project with Joe Lynn Turner is so much better. But if you like this release I strongly suggest you try to...

Whatever, let most the public be caught up in schmoe dime-store music, it's their loss! Glenn is mainly known for his blues and funk stylings, which is only part time in evidence on Addiction. For the most part, this albums rocks but intelligently. Yeah, 7 out of the 10 studio cuts are good-to-great '90s hard rock and even some low rumbling metal. And "the voice" sounds as good as ever. Though I really love good grooves, the ballads - "Talk About It," "Blue Jade" and "I Don't Want to Live that Way Again" are just outstanding, well layered and overflowing with good ol' Hughes emotion. Overall, this album beats the pants off of three-quarters of music in the genre today.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Hughes "Power Soul" Voice Rocks On!, June 24, 2000
This review is from: Addiction (Audio CD)
An excellent piece of work from Mr. Glenn Hughes that shows his true vocal ability and soulful range. Coming out after what was a difficult era in his life, Glenn is able to express his himself here without conviction. Highly recommended for anyone who was into the 1976 "Made in Europe" sound (The all-time #1 rock record in my opinion), OR any of the Purple-Bolin transistion albums, etc. Glenn also offers a bonus track here of "You Fool No One". I believe this was recorded somewhere in Texas, but not sure.

4.0 out of 5 stars ADDICTION To The Voice Of Rock, October 7, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Addiction (Audio CD)
Fourth release by former Deep Purple singer, Glenn Hughes, is one that displays the many dimentions of Glenn's powerful voice. Consider by many as "The God Of Voice", Hughes delivers and solid rock and roll performance that will simply blow you away! 'Addiction', features songs that talk about the painful troubles that those with chemical addictions go through. Songs like, "I Don't Want To Live This Way Again", a slow bluesy number that Hughes sings with such intensity and feel its scary. Another song that will grab your throat from the get go is the mid-tempo mover, "Cover Me". One thing is for sure, once you listen to, 'Addiction', there is no way you can help but be addicted to the powerful and soulful voice of Glenn Hughes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hard Rock, May 13, 2009

This review is from: Addiction (Audio CD)
I really want to say that this is my favorite Glenn Hughes album, but I think that I have to give that to "Soul Mover" even though I listen to "Addiction" far more. This is the darkest album that Glenn has put out, being filled with all the dark emotions of man, such as anger, frustration, heart ache, and the anguished separation from an addiction. This album is an excellent reading of all of those. I've been there and I think that is the attraction of this album to me.
It is a straight ahead hard rock album, and to me this is really where Glenn excels. He may think that it is in the Soul/Funk arena, but I know that it is here. There is no fancy vocals in this one, and no funk to be found. The album has a very nice flow to it, and if Glenn has ever come close to making a concept album this is it. The album is co-produced by Marc Bonnilla and you can really see his touch on the album. It appears as if he and Glenn come from the very same place and in perfect sync on this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars It is growing on me, May 31, 2008
This review is from: Addiction (Audio CD)
I just got this album about a week ago. Upon first listen, I was a little disappointed, and it didn't do much for me. Now, it is growing on me, and I am starting to like almost all of the tracks, and there are some fine moments on here. I wouldn't recommend this as the first GH album to get though.

4.0 out of 5 stars Moving, April 15, 2008
This review is from: Addiction (Audio CD)
I have followed Glenn since the first Trapeze album and this one moves me. Being that Glenn is a recovered drug user and he tells his story in these songs makes the recording special. Having said that, listen to the songs and be moved.

4.0 out of 5 stars With Glenn, Heavier is Better, January 12, 2008

This is my favorite of Glenn's solo albums. It's the most agressive. It's not the kind of album I listen to over and over, but it's great to play once in a while. Holds my attention all the way through, unlike a couple of his other albums.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too metallic, too aggressive, too modern..., March 25, 2003

This is very metallic and aggressive, but not in the same musical vein as Slipknot or even the modern Judas Priest. Personally I'm not too happy with this rather hard and heavy low-key direction, and I believe that both the earlier "From now on" and the more recent project with Joe Lynn Turner is so much better. But if you like this release I strongly suggest you try to get hold of a copy of the officially unreleased Tony Iommi's "Eight star" - the follow up the Black Sabbath album "Seventh star" on which Hughes did the vocals. It sounds very much like this one. It might be rather difficult to get, but Ebay might be of help.
