Preface

Addictions and Substance Abuse: Strategies for Advanced Practice Nursing is a further step in the ongoing efforts to increase practicing nurses' knowledge and skills related to addictions. Whether educators and/or direct care providers, nurses comprise the largest group of health care professionals and have great potential to decrease the prevalence of problems relating to addictions as well as the morbidity and mortality of persons with substance-related disorders. Often nurses recognize that substance use or abuse is causing problems for clients and/or their families but lack sufficient knowledge to intervene with confidence. This book is designed as a reference for several general content areas foundational to advanced practice. It holds some answers and hopefully stimulates ongoing questions about effective ways to make differences in client's lives. The development of a chapter for each specialty posed too great a task, therefore chapters provide basic knowledge for interventions in a range of settings and specialties. The book includes three chapters on addiction and substance abuse issues that influence nursing practice. Chapter 5 discusses the wide variation of substance-related problems in persons of differing ethnic backgrounds. These early chapters contribute frameworks for the specific interventions discussed later in the book.

Addictions and Substance Abuse is designed to support evidence-based practice by master's prepared nurses in advanced practice roles. The interventions and approaches described require the autonomy, knowledge, and skills that characterize the roles of nurse practitioners, clinical specialists, case managers, and consultants. The recent emergence of scientific research on substance use and its influence on major human systems makes it imperative that all nurses upgrade their knowledge of this field. This book contributes resources to meet some of these important goals. In a field where tradition has often dictated practice, new information and its configuration into prevention and treatment modalities are most welcome. Although much of the material herein is reference, learner outcomes and competencies can be developed around the case studies and critical thinking questions provided at the end of the chapters. Educators will find this book a useful resource text.

The appendices are important components of this volume. They provide direction and resources that are up-to-date, inexpensive, and easy to access. Websites are constantly emerging and under revision and the number of agencies and organizations interested in bringing treatment providers together are increasing. The best sources to find up-to-date approaches and increasing current knowledge are provided. If each reader of this volume develops interest in and the facility to further pursue knowledge about evidence-based and effective practice in relation to substance use, abuse, and dependence, then the goals of this venture will be more than realized.
