Being drafted into the Army brings Addison into contact with many misfits. He is friend to some and father figure to others. The letters he gets from his wife become a lifeline for each of the men. Unfortunately, Addison has a fatal flaw that makes his a tragic hero. I truly did not want this book to end for Addison and wife were so wonderful.

I read this book many years ago and it has stayed with me. Not having served in the military I was curious as to what kind of "war" story it would be. But it has nothing to do with war. It has to do with characters that you care about, and their relationships with each other that feel familiar. It has a difficult ending but the flavor of the tale is wonderful. Leon Hale told me this book was out of print and that is sad because it is a good little story. I thanked him for the story, and will be ordering it for my collection soon. NOTICE -- Due to an act of murder and a nude photograph being mentioned, I would not recommend this story for children or teens to read.

I read 4/5 of it in one sitting in a library in Calgary when I was on vacation with my parents, and have never forgotten it...I`ll be reading the rest!
