Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 1-4-Learning addition and subtraction facts is fun with this flash card-style program. Bright colors and snappy music set the tone for this easy to use CD. In a game-type format, students can solve problems for accuracy, compete against the clock, or challenge another player. A built-in "teacher" adjusts the difficulty level of the problems. Players choose addition, subtraction, or mixed problems, and can customize play to a specific number family, 0-12. Unlike many other timed response programs, there is a clear button to change the answer before finalizing. An onscreen score window keeps track of players' progress. At the end of each round, players can choose to print the scorecard, which includes the percent correct and a list of problems to study. A friendly voice directs users to the next function. There is an onscreen help section, with all the rules, button functions, and options explained. Kids will understand intuitively how to play; adults might want to check the help button for the rules. The program is simple, the pace is set by the players, and the game is enthusiastically scored after each set of ten problems. The CD installs easily, and upgrades Quicktime to the version needed to run the program, all in about five minutes. After installing the first time, the CD comes up instantly and play can begin immediately. Flashcards and their boring repetitions are the distant ancestors of this educational software. Elementary grade youngsters will willingly choose to practice math facts with this program.-Marilyn Hersh, Hillside Elementary School, Farmington Hills, MI

About the Author

School Zone Publishing Company began as The School Zone Learning Center in 1972. The Learning Center was a retail teachers supply outlet, specializing in sales to teachers, with two stores in Grand Rapids, Michigan. About 1974, schools instituted changes in educational methods that affected the home and schools. Changes included introducing new teaching methods in math and English and eliminating workbooks provided on a shared basis for home use. With these changes, parents experienced difficulty finding educational material for use at home. Local parents turned to the Learning Centers, requesting workbooks and other at-home teaching aids. In response, the Centers formulated six workbooks and printed 1,000 copies of each. The books sold out in six months. An expanded workbook series was developed and received equally enthusiastic acceptance. School Zone Publishing Company was incorporated in 1979. A new line of workbooks had been written and illustrated by late 1979. In January 1980, the line was printed and School Zone began operations. Market response was extremely favorable. The product line has expanded yearly and currently includes over two hundred educational products.

2.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't run well on Vista; flaws in program design, October 17, 2009
This review is from: Addition and Subtraction Flash Action Software (School Zone Interactive Flash Action Software) (CD-ROM)
I have a 6 year old who needs additional help with addition and subtraction, and thought this "game" might help. But there are several flaws with this game which prevent it from working well for us.

First, the audio part (which wasn't very good to begin with) only works part of the time on Vista machines; sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't.

Second, the CD has to remain in the machine, I guess because of an anti-copy mechanism. That is a big drawback, because it means you have to insert the CD every time you want to play the game, which means that the CD is exposed to little kids, it gets lost, scratched, etc. And if you ever travel, or go anywhere else, you have to make sure you bring the CD with you. Very dumb idea.

Third, the settings allow you to specify addition or subtraction, or a mix, but they only allow you to specify one side of the addition sign. So, for example, if you are trying to teach a new kid their 2's, then 2 + 11 might be their first problem. It should be set up so that both side of the equals sign are programmable, so that you could do say 2 + 1 through 2 + 9.

If these companies would simply watch their users use the software one time, they would realize these limitations, and correct them. I would not recomend this product, because of these shortcomings.
