Doesn't run well on Vista; flaws in program design,

This review is from: Addition and Subtraction Flash Action Software (School Zone Interactive Flash Action Software) (CD-ROM)
I have a 6 year old who needs additional help with addition and subtraction, and thought this "game" might help. But there are several flaws with this game which prevent it from working well for us.
First, the audio part (which wasn't very good to begin with) only works part of the time on Vista machines; sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. Second, the CD has to remain in the machine, I guess because of an anti-copy mechanism. That is a big drawback, because it means you have to insert the CD every time you want to play the game, which means that the CD is exposed to little kids, it gets lost, scratched, etc. And if you ever travel, or go anywhere else, you have to make sure you bring the CD with you. Very dumb idea. Third, the settings allow you to specify addition or subtraction, or a mix, but they only allow you to specify one side of the addition sign. So, for example, if you are trying to teach a new kid their 2's, then 2 + 11 might be their first problem. It should be set up so that both side of the equals sign are programmable, so that you could do say 2 + 1 through 2 + 9. If these companies would simply watch their users use the software one time, they would realize these limitations, and correct them. I would not recomend this product, because of these shortcomings. |
