I am currently reading these books to my daughter who just turned five. We are both really enjoying them. I know the recommended age is seven and up but these books are great even before then but be prepared to discuss it also. My daughter can't wait to find out what Addy is going to do next. I think that these books are a great foundation for young girls. It can help them understand history as well as know that they can make a difference in the world no matter how small they are. We are working our way through the different American Girl series but I definately recommend the Addy books to everyone young and old. I think the history section at the end of each book is fabulous and really puts it in language a child can understand. It also helps that they relate the history to Addy since she is someone your child "knows" after reading the books.

We have enjoyed all the AG series, but for sheer excitement and emotional wallop, nothing could possibly beat this story of a girl who escapes from slavery, only to find prejudice and exclusion in her life of freedom. Her father and brother had been sold away from the plantation, and baby sister had to be left behind. Will they be reunited? These books don't sugarcoat. Yet there is hope and triumph for Addy. We found the Addy books to be absolutely outstanding story-wise, as well as a great starting point for discussion of one of our country's more horrifying chapters in history.

Having two bookworm granddaughters the American Girl books have provided a warm bonding time for us. Learning of the civil war through the eyes of a young save girl, escaping to freedom, only to work as hard as every and searching for family to once again be together. This is a "one more page please grandma" book. My granddaughters know when the Civil War ended, they know the hard ship of slavery thanks to these books. We shared tears with Addy and her mother when Sam and Father were sold. We shared the Joy of freedom and the work of a Victory garden .These books are a wonderful learnning tool as well as entertaining. We plan on reading each set together.

I like this book because it is fun and easy to read. It only has
69 pages and a lot of good pictures. Addy is an American girl who
is a slave and wants to be free. At the end of the book she was
free. I was happy for her.

Addy books are SO exiting! I recommend Addy over Samantha. Children everywhere around the world should read Addy books.Addy is a courageous girl determined to be free in the midst of the civil war.

This story is set in 1864 during the Civil War. The book prompted discussions about race, slavery, the Civil War and life during that time, prejudice behavior, the privledges we take for granted and inner strength. We first read about slavery in Kaya, which my daughter also loved. My daughter talks about the characters (Addy, Kaya, Samantha and others) as though they are part of our extended family. She has set a goal to read all of the American Girl books and is well on her way there.
I can't imagine a girl not enjoying this book.

I really liked this book out of all of the American Girls books. Addy is my favorite. I haven't read this book since I was about in the second grade, I'm in seventh grade now. I really need to get the whole Addy set. I recommend Addy for everyone!

A wonderful story of the life of a slave girl and her family and their dream of freedom. Realistic portrayal of the effect of prejudice and racism. The end of each book gives an outline of what took place in that time frame. Recommended for all regardless of age, gender or nationality.

Addy is so great. It is a 6 serie book set and it is really great. Addy is a amegenary girl who lives right after the civil war. It is filled with amotions. It uses no bad words at all. It is the best for kids ages 10-12

Addy Walker is a girl who is determined to be free. The book did a wonderful job at portraying what life might have been like for a slave girl back then--I didn't think they would even go as far as they did. There was nothing slow about the book-- it was fast paced and exciting. It had the perfect combination of emotions-- sadness, joy, pain-- the only reason I give this book 4 stars instead of 5 is because of it's quick ending. The book had been so discriptive and involed... until the end. But still, I reccomend this book highly!
