5.0 out of 5 stars A Well-Rounded Band, November 30, 2002
By
This review is from: Adema (Audio CD)
You know, I don't get it, everyone gives Adema a bad rap, saying "They are just another nu-metal band, and have no real talent." I'll agree with one part, they are a nu-metal band, but they far exceed most of the other ones out there. Adema can write it all, from fast intense songs (Giving In) to slow well developed songs, which rely more on lyrics than guitar riffs (Speculum). Sure, the singer is related to Jon Davis, but other than in Giving In, he really distances himself from his half brother, only sounding like him on some occasions. Anyway here's a track breakdown:

1. Everyone - A good opening song, really captures the feeling of the album. 4/5
2. Blow It Away - Another song that captures the feel of the album, you could switch Everyone and Blow It Away and I don't think that it would take away from the album at all. 4/5
3. Giving In - The song that got everyone hooked onto Adema, even me. A good solid song and great radio hit. 5/5
4. Freaking Out - Shows the angry side of the band, lyrics could be better but still not a bad song. 3/5
5. The Way You Like It - The second Adema single is just as good if not better than Giving In. A little more rap/rock but still sticks to metal. 5/5
6. Close Friends - This is a very bitter song that has well thought out lyrics as well as good guitar riffs, a truly strong song. 5/5
7. Do What You Want To Do - A fast intense song that is fairly well done, not the best that Adema can do though. 3/5
8. Skin - The first in a series of emotional songs, very powerful lyrics give this song some serious punch. 5/5
9. Pain Inside - Another of the "emotional" songs, not as good as skin but still a powerful song in it's own way. 4/5
10. Speculum - The most powerful song on the album, I have found myself close to tears at times when listening to it sometimes, I was completly blown away by the thought it must have taken to write a song like this. 5/5
11. Drowning - The guitar riff is very much like something that Korn would write, but the lyrics are nothing like Korn, Korn is good, I'm a fan but they couldn't put this much thought into lyrics.
12. Trust - A very good closer to the album, slow and well thought-out, another of the "emotional" songs. One of the best on the album.
13. Shattered - I know, I know, it's not on the American version and now it's on Insomniac's Dream, but I downloaded it a while ago and recreated the album with this track on it, a very good song in itself. 5/5

Before you say, "Oh, he's just another nu-metal fan, he doesn't know metal." I'll just tell you that I am a huge Metallica, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Ozzy, Pantera, and Guns 'N Roses fan. Keep this album in mind for you next [purchase].

5.0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Album This Year So Far, March 19, 2002
By
Michael Crane (Orland Park, IL USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Adema (Audio CD)
I only heard the songs, "the way you like it," and "giving in" when I decided to buy Adema's album. Actually, I didn't realize that "giving in" was done by them until I got the CD, which was a very nice surprise. I really didn't know much about the band and I really hadn't heard anything else about them. Never read magazine articles on them, never saw them on MTV, and rarely even heard them on the radio. So why, you might be asking, did I buy the album when I only heard two songs (or really one song) by them? I like to be surprised. I like to pick up CDs by bands I've never heard if it looks interesting enough. I really had no idea what the reaction would be as soon as I popped this CD into my stereo. Well, it has to be said; I LOVE EVERY SINGLE THING ABOUT THIS ALBUM!

The lead singer has an awesome voice that can be soft or yelling and screaming at times. There is some excellent guitar playing that will get stuck inside your head no matter how hard you try to get it out. The drumming is intense and ties all of the songs together magnificently.

What I was most impressed by the group was their lyrical ability. If you listen to the actual words in the songs, they are so deep and very well constructed. Sure some verses may not rhyme exactly, but that isn't the point. It's very rare to find a music group that can put the exact right words into a song. I think most of the songs were written lyrically by the lead singer, as it usually is in most cases. All I can say is the guy has talent. He is able to drive out every single emotion inside your body.

The big thing about these guys is that the lead singer is related to Korn's Jonathan Davis. So what? I mean, that's interesting and all, but what does that have to do with these guys. And the people who call them Korn...and so on really agitate me, because they have no friggen clue of what these guys are about. Hey, I love Korn, but I'll go on the record and say that these guys are ten times better than Korn when it comes to song writing. Well, that's how I feel, and it had to be said.

I really can't list my favorite songs, because I LOVE EVERY SINGLE SONG ON THAT ALBUM. There is no bad song on the whole CD, which is extremely rare. But I think my absolute favorite song is "trust." I love the music and the lyrics. I mean; "I'm so alone / empty and lost / it's easier to let you go / time will erode / the shame and the fault / it's easier to let you go," it doesn't get any deeper than that! A word of warning, the songs tend to get very depressing, so you may not want to listen to the CD if you're feeling a little down in the dumps. Then again, maybe it'll make you feel better. Don't know, just thought I would warn you.

How would you classify these guys? I wouldn't put them in heavy metal, and I sure as hell wouldn't consider them alternative. So what are they? Good question. I think they're a little in between; not too heavy, yet not too soft. A little like Papa Roach, except there's a lot more singing from the lead singer. Some songs are heavier than others. If you want to hear a good band with some outstanding lyrics, very much like the kind that can only come out of Trent Reznor or Aaron Lewis, then pick up this CD today. You will not regret it at all. I bought this CD a couple of months ago, and I can't stop listening to it. Let's hope radio stations like Q101 doesn't destroy them by overplaying their songs. Same goes for MTV. This is a great band that speaks for itself and really only needs one listening to realize how good this CD is.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great new band with a unique sound!, October 3, 2001
By
This review is from: Adema (Audio CD)
Adema is a great new band with a uniqe sound that is pleasing to the ear but still heavy enough for metal/rock enthusiasts. For anyone who enjoys vocals (no, not screaming, lead singer Mark Chavez actually sings in many of the songs!) with heavy guitars and fast drums. A few songs are fueled by anger, reflected in the lyrics, while others are softer and emotional.

My musical tastes vary (from black metal to techno to classical) but I must say that Adema definately is something new and amazing and will leave a mark on the music industry.
