The Ades:Anthology - recently issued in September 2011 - offers a choice of substantial pieces from the early 90's to the beginning of 2000s that haven't been offered before - which hold up beautifully together, throughout the entire selection. A small disappointment is the inclusion of the Violin Concerto which has already appeared. I bought the 2 CDs in MP3 version for a ridiculously cheap price ( $9.49 )which really is astonishing considering the depth and complexity of this music and how beautifully it is played and recorded. Particularly powerful is the first movement of the Piano Quintet and a portion of Ades' Concert Paraphrase for piano, specifically Part II, which is the composer himself playing with combined passion and precision. This music is highly complex, sometimes dense, and offers a sort of English equivalent of our John Adams'intellectual yet thoroughly intuited creativity. Ades is endlessly researching English and Continental Classical and Popular styles and has a way of putting fragments of what he's heard throughout most of his compositions. Despite the tonal and metrical complexity, there's always intense drama and humor lurking, that rushes forth at odd, unforeseeable moments. There is a sense of mimicry of animal sounds as well as all sorts of mechanical noises, that are still delivered to us via standard musical notation and ensemble or solo playing. Judging from the spiritedness of these performances, it's obvious that Ades has had a profoundly good influence upon the musicians who mostly come from the city of Birmingham, UK. If you find this music taxing or too nervous, I urge you to listen again, because you will hear it differently the 2nd time and so on into the present moment.Read more ›

Intriguing and charming pieces well played. Easier to hear on the recording than in live performance.
