The touchpad:
The center is smooth and the edges of the touch-sensitive surface are slightly rougher, like fine sandpaper. The upper-right triangle is also rougher. 3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not great seems to be flimsy
Since I am disabled. I rely upon touch pads to interact with the computer. They have been a lifesaver! This touchpad isn't that great the buttons seem cheap and not solid. I'm glad I don't use this mouse as my everyday mouse I guarantee that it would not last.

So my summary is that it works good, but I doubt it would last more than a year...

4.0 out of 5 stars Ergonomic and customizable!, January 26, 2007
This review is from: Adesso EasyCat 2-Button PS/2 Glidepoint Touchpad (GPP160 ) (Personal Computers)
The touchpad:
The center is smooth and the edges of the touch-sensitive surface are slightly rougher, like fine sandpaper. The upper-right triangle is also rougher. I would've preferred the whole surface to be smooth, but it's easy to get used to. A lot of people are complaining that it seems cheap, but I don't see anything wrong with it. The buttons are well-placed and easy to press. It has a large enough area, yet it's small and light enough to hold in the palm of your hand. It also has a long cable so you can either set it on your desktop or lean back in your chair and browse the web almost by remote.

By installing the driver (which can also be found on the cirque website) you can customize features:
- Can program buttons & top right corner. (You can even program them to run a shortcut.)
- Scroll areas can be turned on/off, but not specially programmed
- top: browser back & forward
- left: zoom
- bottom & right: horizontal & vertical scrolling
- Drag Lock: This is a neat feature. One of the things that people hate about touchpads is the difficulty in dragging. If your finger reaches the edge of the touchpad while dragging an icon, this lets you continue dragging without having to reselect the icon.
- Glide Extend: If you're selecting text from a very long word document or web page, the screen automatically scrolls up/down when your finger hits the edge of the touchpad.
- Can change scroll speed: smooth or variable number of lines at a time
- Adjust pointer speed
- Set orientation of touchpad: Unfortunately when reoriented, the scroll bars & buttons aren't reoriented. So if you reorient the touchpad 180 degrees, scrolling is on the left edge and scrolling up actually scrolls down (and vice versa).

My biggest complaint is that scrolling behaves differently for different applications. Vertical scrolling is too slow in Internet Explorer, too fast in Excel, and perfect in Firefox. However, horizontal scrolling and zooming don't even work in Firefox.

The programmable corner is a good idea, but the area is too large. I kept inadvertently tapping it, so I just disabled its function.

And why is the cable on the side instead of at the top?

Of course there are still actions that are easier or more precise with a mouse, so I recommend that you keep your mouse. I have a Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer plugged into USB and the EasyCat into PS/2, and the can be used at the same time. Every once in a while my mouse won't work when I restart my computer, but it usually kicks in again after the next restart.

A great product at a reasonable price! This is a must for people with tendonitis. This allows me to keep my wrist and forearm straight and pain-free. The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is because of the scrolling issues. If scrolling speed could be controlled by the touchpad software instead of the application software, it would be perfect.

this touchpad works great. our son was born with only 3 fingers on each hand and manipulating a mouse was difficult for him. the touchpad makes it very easy to navigate the internet. he is only 3 years old.

Very happy with the glidepoint. Only downfall is that it's so light it likes to slide around the desktop. Solved with a piece of non slip rubber underneath it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better For Your Hand Than Clicking A Mouse, August 27, 2008

Adesso GPP-160PW Adesso EasyCat 2 Button PS-2 Glidepoint Touchpad - WhiteIn order to relieve the many aches and pains from using various mice, I decided to try this touchpad. Joint aches were gone within a week. Unfortunately, the new muscles in the shoulder ached for about a week before I got used to the new action. This touchpad is superb. Responsive and with great scroll features. It does horizontal and vertical scrolls very smoothly and also zooms based on the application. Better feel than any I've tried on laptops. Highly recommend.

The external touchpad mouse is one of the best ways to control the adverse impact of mouse use. Keep your hand, arm and shoulder in more relaxed postions when mousing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Touchpad helps somewhat, April 5, 2007
This review is from: Adesso EasyCat 2-Button PS/2 Glidepoint Touchpad (GPP160 ) (Personal Computers)
I bought this because gripping the mouse was hurting my left wrist. I had planned on using the eraser of a pencil with the touchpad instead of my finger to cut down on my wrist movement but found the touchpad does not work with anything but your finger. So using the index finger or any finger, I'm still using the same tendon and nerves in my wrist and arm.

It requires very soft touches which takes a little practice. I was tapping too hard in the beginning. Highlighting, dragging and moving lines takes some practice as well. I have not used the programmable features yet. Since the touchpad hasn't eliminated my pain, I'm trying to stay off my computer as much as possible.

If you have no pain, I feel you would prefer this over a mouse. Being able to hold it in close to your body or on your lap is a more natural position than extending your arm out gripping a mouse.

I wish I had started using this before the mouse, I probably wouldn't have developed my wrist problem.

This review is from: Adesso EasyCat 2-Button PS/2 Glidepoint Touchpad (GPP160 ) (Personal Computers)
Great but hard to find product. I use a standard mouse at work. I use the touchpad on my home computer in order to avoid repetitive motion injuries. I shopped this product around and Amazon had the best price.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works fine, driver-less in Win2k and XP, but cheap-looking, February 28, 2005

The Adesso Easycat touchpad is made by a company called Cirque which is a division of the Japanese accessories company ALPS, which makes most of the touchpads for laptops. The touchpad is sensitive and accommodates click, double-click, drag, and also right-click (in the upper righthand triangle area). For 35 bucks it comes in a plain OEM-like box and feels rather cheap, but it's plug-n-play on widnows 2000 and xp. I'm pretty happy with it.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love my Adesso glidepoint touchpad!, September 8, 2009
This review is from: Adesso EasyCat 2-Button PS/2 Glidepoint Touchpad (GPP160 ) (Personal Computers)
I've been using the Adesso glidepoint touchpad for about eight years. The model I bought in ~2002 is still going strong.

I am convinced that this handy little device has saved me from serious repetitive motion injury. These days, if I use a mouse for more than an hour or two, I start to get major wrist and hand pain.

I agree with one of the other reviewers that the rubber feet on the bottom don't always provide enough traction on slippery surfaces. I solved this by attaching it to my desk with invisible tape :-)

I love my touchpad so much that I've bought a serial-to-USB adapter so I can continue to use the device after migrating to computers that don't have serial ports. Happily for newcomers, though, they do make a USB model, too:

Touchpads do require some finger dexterity, but once you've practiced and mastered it, you'll never go back to a mouse - trust me!

I purchased this easycat to replace an easycat I have been using for the last 10 years. The left button on the older device was finally showing a little wear. I have a Kinesis Advantage USB - Keyboard - USB - black which fits this mouse easily in the empty space between the sets of keys.
