We were looking for a reading lamp for a corner chair. This fits nicely into the corner behind my reading chair and allows me to focus right on my book. The base is small, but heavy enough to be quite stable. Using compact fluorescent bulbs means it can be close to my shoulder, but remain "not hot". The only minor complaint is that it could be just a little taller, so I could focus it pointed slightly more downward.
