Holds 3 bulbs - Super Bright,
By
This review is from: Adesso Piedmont Combo Torchiere, Black (Tools & Home Improvement)
This lamp is very unique in that it can hold up to 3 light bulbs. The main upper lamp has two bulb sockets, plus a 3rd bulb socket for the reading lamp arm. If you use a power saving fluorescent bulb, you can use two 40 watt fluorescent bulb for the main light, which gives the equivalent of 300 watts (150w x 2) of standard incandescent or halogen light output for only a quarter of the energy costs (40w x 2). There is no other torchiere style lamp that will allow this level of brightness and long term cost savings.

My trusty $20 torchiere from Target that I have used for years recently broke, and I wanted to replace it with a similar floor lamp. I was specifically looking for one with a flexible gooseneck reading lamp like my old one, but there were very few of those available at an affordable price. I saw this Adesso model here on Amazon, read the reviews, and thought it was perfect. It was really simple to assemble; all you have to do is twist the poles and the shades into place with no additional tools. The shades are made of white translucent plastic, which is fine by me, but at this price range I would have expected something nicer, like glass. When I finished setting up the lamp, I was very disappointed by the gooseneck lamp. It's not as long as I thought it would be, and although it's flexible, it doesn't hold its position very well. It kind of droops down from whatever position you configure it in. I was most disappointed by the type of bulbs the lamp accepts though. There's big bold words on the box that reads, "Do not use halogen bulbs, only standard". No where on the product page here on Amazon mentioned this. Who in their right mind would want to use standard, energy wasting bulbs when CFLs are so widely available now? I tried installing CFL bulbs anyways, and was relieved it accepted them. Ok, so I screwed in my CFLs, which were all mini 15W (60W equiv.), but there wasn't enough room for them in the main lamp. Not only that, the CFLs stuck out hideously over the shade because it's not high enough to cover them. I then tried standard bulbs, and found they were dangerously close to each other, creating a potential fire hazard. After much frustration and trying to figure what to do next, I discovered the bulb sockets could be re-adjusted so that the CFLs would fit and the shade would be able to cover them. I don't think they were meant to be adjustable, but I'm glad they could be. I asked my big strong uncle to help me do so, re-installed the CFLs, and the lamp was *near* perfect. So if you're planning to purchase this lamp, be aware that it wasn't made for CFLs, and you'll have to do some re-adjusting to the lamp if you plan to use them. With all its problems, I really do like the look of this lamp, and I also like how there is only one on/off switch located right in the middle on the pole, used for both lamps. Its placement is convenient because I don't have to stand up when I'm in bed to turn the lamp on or off.

Looks Cheaper than the picture + CFL advice,

In the picture here it looks a lot more elegant. The shades look like glass or something better than the cheap plastic it really is. It's not that ugly and still is the closest thing to what I wanted; my apt is black & white modern theme, and I had wanted a torchiere with an adjustable side reading lamp, all of which this offers. My complaint about the quality is that I don't think it should cost $50+. It looks like a $20 lamp from target (mind you I couldn't find what I wanted there).About CFLs - as a previous reviewer said, they do stick out hideously. The main shade you can bend the socket degree a bit and make them fit, but nothing you can do with the reading lamp. I use them anyways. If this really bothers you, you can go for cold cathode CFLs, which look like a standard bulb, but they aren't as bright and you need shop around specialty lighting places as they are not readily available yet, try specialty lighting stores. Another thing about CFLs, if the color bugs you don't blame the bulb. This is my opinion using the 2 main kinds in this particular lamp in my home. Full spectrum (has number about 5000K)is supposed to simulate sunlight. Sounds good but indoors, it looks really crisp, cold and sterile. The soft white (look for about 2700K), which has a yellowy tinge, looks better. I believe it will look better in most cases too.

Great lamp. We've had it for a few months now. My son is able to read in bed and it's adjustable to his position in bed. Really like that it uses standard lightbulbs.

No,

I've owned this lamp for a year and a half now, and it is starting to fall apart. The lamp claims to handle 2 150w light bulbs (which I never used), but even with 100w bulbs, the shade has become brittle in some places. Just this morning I went to change a light bulb, and a large section of plastic just crumbled, leaving a large hole in the shade. The reading lamp also no longer works.I really loved this lamp when I first got it, it was bright, the gooseneck lamp was really handy, and I liked the style. After owning it for some time though, my advice is to stay away.

Bought Two of 'Em,
This review is from: Adesso Piedmont Combo Torchiere, Black (Tools & Home Improvement)
My wife said mine was the best she had seen and she is a bargain hunter. So I got her one, too. Short and sweet: it takes plenty of power -- up to 100 watts per each of three. I use a 60 watt eco-bulb, which is better and cheaper than normal ones though it costs more up front, for the gooseneck reading lamp. Easy to assemble, easier with two of you. Two prongs on the plug. This is the best thing going. Lamps with real old fashioned bulbs are the best. And the right price.

i got this lamp from the "today's deal". it works fine but i wish it has a separate switch for the small light. now turn it once, turn on the big light, 2nd time turn off the big light and turn on the small light, 3rd time turn both on, 4th time turn them all off, in that sequence. if you want to just turn on the small light sorry you will have to go through the sequence.

Not bad, but exercise caution.....,
This review is from: Adesso Piedmont Combo Torchiere, Black (Tools & Home Improvement)
I have two of these lamps, one of which is conveniently placed behind the sofa with the smaller light perfectly situated to give me bright light when I'm sitting and doing needlework. The lamps are attractive and practical. A word of caution, however: do NOT use bulbs larger than 100 watts in the upper shade. We put in 150-watt bulbs at first, and some time later we were dismayed to see that burn holes were appearing in the plastic shade. Eventually we wrote to the company to order replacement shades. I think this would happen eventually even with 100-watt bulbs; it seems to be happening again. We may replace one of the lamps soon because the reading lamp has stopped working; I think this time we may splurge for a lamp with glass shades which will not become damaged due to the heat of the bulbs.

Great value!,

Very easy assembly, I bought one then later on bought a second one. I bought these to get away from my old energy wasting halogen torchiere. I put various wattage compact fluorescent bulbs in them. Works great! Looks much more expensive than it costs. Even the plastic shades look good and not cheap.

This combo torchiere is fantastic for the price! The price is much lower than comparable lamps.Because we have large & giant breed dogs whose tails are deadly to table lamps, I have been forced to use mostly floor lamps. Consequently, I have purchased no fewer than 10 in the last few years. Many have been of poor quality and break within a year or two, but I need high output light so I keep looking. I have preferred halogen because of the bright white light which covers a large portion of a room but this incandescent lamp is just as good -- and better because of the two separate lights. It also seems solid. Don't buy compact fluorescent bulbs! I mistakenly ordered the Compact Fluorescent bulbs listed as "Frequently Bought Together" with this lamp. They're physically too big for the lamp! Amazon makes Returns as easy as possible but they're still a huge pain. I then purchased one 60-watt & two 150-watt bulbs - maximums for this lamp. You may want to use smaller bulbs but I love lots of light! Bottom line -- I love this lamp and am buying another one. |
