This review is from: Adieu Verdue (Audio CD)
After his 1997 comeback with "Approche-Toi", the deutch avant-garde chanson composer returned with "Adieu Verdure" an album on which he's livelier than ever. Best known for classics such as Mireille or Bruxelles, Dick Annegarn managed to establish himself with a style unlike anything else in the french-spoken chanson. This is is 11th studio album and it spans a lot of genres and emotions such as blues (Que Toi), afrobeat (Boileau), pastoral ballad (La Limonade) with wit and taste. Sometimes his broken down vocals remind me of Tom Waits though Annegarn definitively has a persona of his own. At 46, at the time this album was released, Annegarn proved to be one of the most peculiar and interesting artists out of Netherlands and in the french chanson realm. One of his biggest fans, Mathieu Boogaerts, even came to pay his dues on the sweet duet Rhapsode is. Of course, being that unique has its downs and Annegarn seldom managed to get more than a cult following which is a realm shame for an artist this talented so, be curious, try "Adieu Verdure" and do not forget there are 14 other albums to enjoy if you did with this one.
