Objective review of the bottle itself (as much as possible!),
By Kate T (Philadelphia, PA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Adiri BPA Free Natural Nurser Ultimate Bottle Stage 1 White, Slow Flow (0-3 months) (Baby Product)
I will try to write an objective review of the bottle itself - as much as I can. For that let me start out with the premise: whether or not your baby takes the bottle or not has nothing to do with the quality of the product itself, babies are human beings, though small, and have their likes and dislikes, which will include nipple size, shape, feel of the material the nipple is made from, etc. Since I am reviewing the BOTTLE ITSELF it follows that my baby did eat from it. This was the first bottle I gave my son - I really wanted it to work - and he refused to take a Playtex bottle.
PROS: 1) Of course, their biggest selling point: the bottles are BPA and polycarbonate free. In this day and age when we still do not know what causes developmental disorders like autism, I figure it is better to expose your child to as few chemicals as you can. 2) The material from which it is made is much more life-like and looks more like the real nipples (at least the ones I have!). 3) Compared to other bottles (like Playtex and Avent) the nipple is actually pretty small and it might be more convenient for a small baby to hold and not choke. CONS: 1) As one reviewer already mentioned, to fill the bottle you have to close it with a lid and invert it to fill from the bottom; the nipple does not close well and would constantly leak, so you have to be very quick about pouring - closing - inverting, and it is DEFINITELY not a one hand operation. Afterwards the spilled contents would drip from the bottle and the inside of the lid would be all dirty. Very annoying. 2) Because of the shape of the bottle and nipple - very small nipple that turns into a wide portion very abruptly - you need a fair amount of access liquid in the bottle for your baby not to start swallowing air. I feed my son with pumped breast milk and I found it very annoying that I had to waste so much of it - at least 1 oz. No matter what they say, when the level of milk gets low those "petals" are absolutely useless. 3) You can not put this bottle into a bottle-warmer and warming up milk in it under running water is impossible: the walls are very thick on the bottom and it takes too long, and if you cover the bottle with a lid - forget about it. I had to warm up milk in a separate container - like a milk storage bag - and then pour it into the bottle. 4) The fact that the small nipple turns into a wide opened bottle so abruptly means that there is no place for a baby to establish a good vacuum seal for suction. My son kept making "kissing" noises when he ate, a tell-tale sign of air ingestion, and you could see that the corners of his mouth where completely open and unused. This design is not natural, actually, since babies are supposed to take in a large portion of areola as well as the nipple, which causes the nipple to elongate and form more of a cone shape. 5) Probably due to the problem mentioned in point 4 above and the fact that this silicone is very soft, I discovered that this material is not very durable. After about a week of using the bottle (I bought only one to try out) one morning as I was trying to fill it with milk I noticed a residue around the nipple where the wide portion of the bottle starts. At first I thought that I did not wash it well, so I started to scrub the bottle again - residue did not come off. After looking at the bottle closer I realized that it was frayed silicone!!! My 3.5-week-old son - read toothless - started rubbing through the bottle with his gums! At this price for each bottle if I had to get a new one after each week...well need I say more. I am very grateful to this bottle for being a transition from breast, but one week and 1.5 days is all it took to give it up. One afternoon as I was feeding my son he kept constantly loosing suction on the nipple and would start rooting in frustration to grab it again (even though when we started using this bottle he also fell asleep when feeding, just like with the breast). After a while both of us got tired and annoyed, he started crying and I went and got the Playtex bottle with disposable liners (also chemical free, by the way!!!), which he has refused to take initially. I poured the milk from Adiri into this Playtex bottle and we have been happy ever since!!! I use a Playtex pump, so I can pump directly into these liners and store the milk in them, warming up takes less than 1 minute under running water - very useful in the middle of the night- and my baby seems to be more comfortable and he is ingesting MUCH less air. In short, the bottle has MANY design flaws, but who knows what your baby will like and how well this bottle will fit with his/her feeding style (especially if your baby refuses to take any other bottle). It is worth trying it out, but buy one bottle and see how it goes. Good luck!!!!!!!

Ok, that's a little bit of an exaggeration. But this was the last resort for us after trying to get the baby to take all kinds of nipples from my husband with no luck. If this one didn't work it was going to mean I didn't get to leave the house for more than 2 hours until the kid was on solid food, and things were getting pretty tense between the husband and me!
After a few days of easing into it, the baby now takes this bottle like a charm - even from me in his carseat while we're driving. Thank God. The bottle has MAJOR design flaws, as noted by pretty much everyone. Here's how I avoid the problems - so successfully that I never lose any milk anymore. 1. Always hold the bottle by whatever is on the bottom (be it the screw on vent cap or the big cover), because the cover doesn't stay on at all. If you hold the bottle by whatever is on top, the cover will inevitably fall off and leave you with a lot of spilt milk. 2. Ignore completely Adiri's stupid instructions about inverting the bottle into the cover before you fill it and putting the nipple into the recessed space. It doesn't work and leaks anyway. Instead, forget the cover completely; simply wash your hand and hold your finger(s) over the nipple while pouring milk in. 3. Before using the bottle, thoroughly dry the screw-on grooves, both on the bottle and on the cap, so that where they screw together they create a good seal. Adiri advises also drying the nipple, the nipple recession in the cover, and I think the little vent disk area. I don't know if those steps are necessary but the screw grooves are. 4. Have your containers of milk pre-opened before you start the process so you're not fiddling with them while trying to cover the nipple hole with your other hand. 5. Once you've got your finger on the nipple, tilt the bottle the minimal angle necessary (ie, keep it as horizontal as possible). (In case of leaks, the more vertical the bottle is, the faster the milk leaves the nipple, so this way you save as much as you can.) Then screw the cap on as tight as you can, turn it right side up, and screw it further one more time to see if you can get it tighter. Don't put the cover on if it's not necessary - its loose grip on the bottle will cause accidents. 6. Buy the "warming cap" if you'd like to be able to heat the milk by running the Adiri directly under water instead of pre-warming it. Just keep the nipple out of the stream of water. Tip to Adiri...next time you update the bottle, it would be awfully easy to print a second set of oz/ml measurements going up from the bottom, so that whichever direction the bottle is pointing in, it's easy to tell how much is in there. Not sure why this hasn't been designed in already - it's sort of obvious. A word of advice about introducing the Adiri if your baby has rejected other bottles - make it like a relaxed game for the baby. Try to de-stress and just approach the baby in a fun way, *without the goal at first* of having her or him actually drink from the bottle. Just give it a few days where your only goal is to let them play with the nipple in their mouth. This bottle feels good to them, which leads them eventually to suck on their own if they're not too freaked out, and I think the stress of us parents about how badly we need them to take a bottle really rubs off on the baby.

LIFESAVER!,
This review is from: Adiri BPA Free Natural Nurser Ultimate Bottle Stage 1 White, Slow Flow (0-3 months) (Baby Product)
This bottle was a lifesaver when my youngest daughter refused any bottles! I was exclusively breastfeeding, but was in school 2 nights a week. This was the only bottle my daughter would take. Some people talk about it being messy, but it's especially simple for breast milk. You heat the milk, put a clean finger over the nipple, turn it over, pour the milk in and screw the bottom on. We never really had issues with it being messy. I HIGHLY recommend this item! I also think it would be good if someone is unable to breastfeed in the hospital for some reason. May help with nipple confusion! [...]

SOOOO Helpful for stubborn breastfeeders,

This bottle is amazing - no other way to put it. I had surgery when my daughter was a week old, and she took her Avent bottles just fine for about three days. She is now 3 1/2 months old and I have been pulling my hair out for the last month trying to get her to take a bottle. I've tried breastmilk, formula, a combination, Avent, Avent disposables, Dr Brown's, Dr Brown's wideneck, Medela, Playtex VentAir, and she hated all of them. She would scream for five hours before she'd even consider taking a bottle. The first time the Adiri Natural Nurser hit her lips, she took it. We were shocked and figured it must have been a fluke, but no - she likes this bottle!!! She still prefers mommy, but she's going to day care soon and needs to adjust. I would highly recommend that anyone struggling to get their little one to take a bottle try this. Buy one and give it a shot - it has saved my sanity and I no longer worry about my baby! PLUS - being BPA free - even better.

I bought this bottle b/c my baby is strictly breastfed and I wanted to minimize nipple confusion. It's very cool looking modern age bottle, it's simple to use. I've read the reviews about leaking but it only leaked on me once the first time I used it then I figured out the correct way to put the lid on. You have to make sure the upper lid is on tight (push it past the hash marks on the bottle) or else it will leak. The bottle has to be turned upside down to fill it so ensuring the lid is on this way will prevent leaks. I really love it. The flow is pretty fast. I doubt I will use another baby bottle, unless I need to upgrade to the faster flow Adiri bottle. If you have a breastfed baby, buy this bottle! It's worth the money!

No nipple confusion!,

We've used these bottles for 4 months now, on and off, and to be honest, they were hard to get used to, but once we got the hang of it, we love them! Here's what we did to solve the common problems:
1) The first time we used it, it leaked. Once I was sure to tighten the lid securely, that was no longer an issue. 2) Then there was the issue of trying to get the milk into the bottle without it leaking out of the nipple. I, too, tried using the lid. The lid does not work to keep the milk in the bottle, and once you turn it back upright, the milk that leaked into the lid is all over the place. What I do now is wash my hands, hold the bottle upside down in one hand with my index finger over the holes in the nipple, and with my free hand pour the milk in, screw the lid on, then turn it right-side up. 3) The odd shape of the nipple takes some getting used to, if you are used to using regular bottles. You have to treat this bottle like a breast. When breastfeeding, the baby needs to take in as much of the breast as possible, not just the nipple. So, just like breastfeeding, it takes a little while to get the right "latch". Once we got that down, our daughter drank the bottle down fast, even on the slow-flow bottle. 4) It does take a while to heat these bottles up. We try to use fresh milk in the refrigerator as much as possible, because frozen milk takes quite a bit longer to warm up. The milk can always be heated in a different container and then transferred to the bottle, or just do what we do: plan ahead. We try to get the bottle into some hot water about 1/2 hour before we anticipate her being hungry. Now, to the reason I love these bottles: we took a break from pumping and bottle-feeding for about 2 months. We just didn't have a need to do it, and pumping, storing, and re-heating milk is a lot of work compared to just feeding the baby straight from the tap. We tried the bottle again after that break, and she took it without a problem. I know people who have tried to give their breastfed babies bottles with no success, and wound up never being able to leave their children with anyone for more than a couple of hours at a time. Being able to leave my baby with her father while I go somewhere, and not having to worry that she might be crying and hungry when I get home, is a wonderful thing!

My daughter prefers the Breastflow,
By superfrodo "Tiffany" (Wooster, OH) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Adiri BPA Free Natural Nurser Ultimate Bottle Stage 1 White, Slow Flow (0-3 months) (Baby Product)
The Adiri claims to be a "nurser" bottle that simulates breastfeeding, but I beg to differ!!
My family recently took a road trip and realized that we had the wrong size nipples for my breastfed daughter's bottle. (She normally uses The First Years Breastflow bottle.) In an act of desperation, we stopped at the nearest Babies 'R' Us to buy the correct nipples, since that is the only store I know of that carries the bottle. But this particular store didn't carry the Breastflow, so we opted for the Adiri instead, since its package claims that it feels like a real breast. However, this claim is very misleading. The Adiri bottle is shaped much like a real breast, but it does not perform like a real breast. In order to breastfeed, a baby must open their mouth wide and place it over the larger part of the breast, not just on the nipple. The Adiri did not allow my daughter to do this, and as a result she ended up frustrated with milk dribbling out of the bottle and down her chin. In my opinion, The First Years Breastflow bottle is a much better bottle for breastfed babies if only because it allows the baby to put their mouth over the large part of the nipple, making the transition from breast to bottle much easier for both mom and baby. I would never use another bottle, and it's a shame that more stores do not carry them.

Hallelujah! It worked!,

Our 3 month old son would not take a bottle, suck on a pacifier, or even suck on our fingers since he was born. Breastfeeding, however, has never been a problem for him. I have to return to work in two weeks so we were desperate. We've tried pretty much everything--5 different bottles and even a Hazelbaker Finger Feeder (with a little tube you tape to your finger) with no success. We've even seen an occupational therapist to see if there was a physical or mechanical problem of some sort. She told us that he didn't know how to cup the nipple with his tongue and, for some reason, this wasn't a problem with breastfeeding but it was with the firm nipple of the bottle. He also has a very sensitive gag reflex and would gag when any of the bottles' nipples touched the roof of his mouth. So...after everything else failed, we tried the Adiri bottle. It did not work at first. My husband tried for 2 days for several hours each day (while I was out of the house) with no success. It was on the second day, however, that I kept trying with him when I returned home and he finally took it. I did NOT offer to nurse him for the rest of the day and just kept feeding him with the bottle (with lots of positive reinforcement and in roughly the same position and location where I usually nurse him) until he got better at it and stopped fussing when I gave it to him. It's hard to believe it finally worked, but it did! I know I was desperately searching for advice on the web and the reviews of this bottle made me very hopeful. I am so incredibly relieved that it worked for our son.
