1.0 out of 5 stars Not enough detective too much kissy face, February 27, 2011
This review is from: Adirondack Detective Returns (Paperback)
I read the first book, Adirondack Detective, and found it interesting. It was hard to put down and I finished the book in one weekend. This book the second in the series was the complete opposite. It was difficult to pick up and laborous to finish. It took me a month because I dreaded picking it up, the author could have done a much better job. He spends too much time and dialog with Jason and Patty making out and calling easy other sweetie and such. If I read "our passions were building" once I read it one hundred times.

The author spends alot of time rehashing and reitterating the same dialog which gets very old very quickly.
Who calls their dog my K9, Reuben is a good dog but come on how many times do you have to read that he went out to do his business. If the repetition was removed the book would have been half the length and more interesting.

Do your self a favor and skip this one unless you are having difficulty sleeping because you are sure to be bored. The dialog is descriptive but mechanical and uninteresting. The real story, the Bernard "Bernie" Draper investigation, never fully develops because of the time spent with the characters pending wedding.

I like detail but this book is destined to be given to the county library because I would never recommend it to a friend. I'm going to try the next book but I will borrow it from the library instead of purchasing it. That way if I don't like it I can return it and not waste money as well as time.

3.0 out of 5 stars Where's the "Detective"?, September 15, 2005

This review is from: Adirondack detective returns
This is the second in a series of Adirondack Detective series and it's hard to say if it's better or worse. Briant spends more time with personal matters (the upcoming?? wedding) and other things (Patty's surprise one-year anniversary from being abducted). But he seems to be doing less detective work.

In book 1, he is instrumental in solving the central crimes in the story but in book 2 he's relegated to a middle man.

I still think he could do more with the descriptive Adirondacks, though his flights with his friend Dale are more descriptive than in Book 1.

Our "hero" tends to be very meticulous - to a fault. I sometimes wonder what Patty sees in this guy!

Despite the above criticisms, I still think it's a decent read. On to #3!

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant, entertaining sequel to John Briant's 1st book, January 6, 2003
By
This review is from: Adirondack Detective Returns (Paperback)
John Briant's book 'Adirondack Detective Returns' is an enjoyable, exciting, romantic follow-on to his earlier fine book 'Adirondack Detective'. As I turned the pages of 'Adirondack Detective Returns', it was like I was "going back home" to all my old "friends & Acquaintences" from 'Adirondack Detective'. Private Investigator Jason Black and his fiancee' Patty provide a subplot of love, blossoming in the Adirondacks, while Jason propels himself into the thrilling main plot - the case of the 'Arizona - New York' connection. And along the way, author John Briant weaves us through a number of subplots that just add spice and excitement to the main dialogue and the anticipation of Jason's and Patty's budding romance. Having lived myself in the Arizona desert areas around Casa Grande, as well as in the Utica, NY area with the prestigious Adirondack Mountains Park a short journey North, I could immerse into Briant's story like I was one of the characters myself - it is that real and engrossing! John Briant weaves his story so well, while paying homage to the hearty people and places of the great Adirondack Park. From Dale and his piloting adventures, to John & Lila at the diner, to friendly Wilt Chambers and logger Charlie Perkins - all make you feel at home in the Adirondack North land - it's like you're part of the 'gang' as you read along. And John Briant also introduces us to many new characters (on both sides of the law!). All in all its a great read and I highly recommend 'Adirondack Detective Returns' to anyone who wants to curl up in an easy chair or rock on a porch swing while venturing into a few hours of Adirondack excitement! My hat is off to you Mr. Briant - I hope you have many more stories for us involving this great cast of characters in the beautiful God's Country inside the Adirondack Blue Line!
