Book Description

October 2006
When war breaks out abruptly in 1973, childhood friends Haim and Dov are called up together to serve in their tank battalion, but in the chaos of battle, the friends are separated. A month later, Haim returns alone, on his first leave home. As he struggles to come to terms with his experiences, weary and saddened but sustained by his religious faith, there is one question that remains uppermost in Haim’s mind: What happened to Dov during those fateful days after the outbreak of war?

Much of the narrative of ADJUSTING SIGHTS (Toby Press, May 15, 2003, hdcv.) centers around recounting those chaotic first days of war endured by Haim, a tank gunner, along the hills and valleys of the Golan Heights. Interspersed with the action are Haim’s memories of childhood, growing up with Dov in an immigrant neighborhood of Jerusalem. The religious teachings Haim and his fellow soldiers have grown up with are constantly with them as they deal with the devastating disarray of their forces and their fear of failure and capture. Prayer and Talmudic passages form a framework that enables them to cope with their experiences. Sabato skillfully draws us into the individual worlds of these young men; their courage as they help each other, their pain as they deal with the loss of comrades.

A lightly fictionalized biography written in a style reminiscent of S.Y. Agnon, ADJUSTING SIGHTS is not a book about religion, politics, or the rights and wrongs of war, but rather, it’s a story about the personal experiences of a 19-year old man who has to adjust not only the sights of his gun, but also his understanding of the world in which he lives.

The author, Haim Sabato, descends from a long line of rabbis from Aleppo, Syria. He was born in Egypt but moved to Israel with his family when he was six. He served in the tank corps in the 1973 Yom Kippur War, and today heads a Yeshiva near Jerusalem. ADJUSTING SIGHTS was a runaway bestseller in Israel, and won the prestigious Sapir Prize for Literature. It is his second book.

ADJUSTING SIGHTS was translated into English by a leading Israeli translator, Hillel Halkin. Halkin is also a journalist and author.

Avoids the pitfalls of war stories ...written with a music that slowly filters through to the soul the reader -- Haaretz, leading Israeli daily newspaper

From its first rhythmic sentences, Adjusting Sights is a novel with a sensibility that’s decidedly not ordinary. -- The Jewish Week, June 2003

Sabato’s writing wells up from deep sources that will carry you away and continually surprise. ...captivates and inspires deep trust. -- Shimon Peres, Former Prime Minister of Israel

[a] delicate, poignant story. The classical Hebrew is artfully translated. Highly recommended... -- Library Journal, April 2003 --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

From the Publisher

The original title of Adjusting Sights, Tiyum Kavanot, refers to the adjustment of the gun sight of a tank, the optical device that brings the necessary coordinates into focus. But the word kavanot also means the spiritual intentions one has when praying, making the title a double meaning.

Haim Sabato used the writing to bring together all the coordinates of his life, juxtaposing the frenzy of war and the pain of friends killed with repeated reference to prayers and Talmudic passages. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Riveting!, August 24, 2003
This review is from: Adjusting Sights (Hardcover)
Too realistic to be thought of as fiction, Sabato's engrossing accounty of a tanker gunner's experiences in the Golan during the 1973 Yom Kippur War in Israel blend traditional Jewish liturgy with wartime action. The story explores the grueling physical and psychological realities of war experienced as a soldier the Israeli tank corps. Haim relates his personal experience as he seeks to find an answer to what became of his yeshiva friend and study partner Dov who joined the tank corps at the same time that he did. This is a gripping account of what it means to be a soldier and how just one individual tries to cope in the chaos of an unexpected war. Long after the story ends, liturgical phrases will be sure to pop up with new meaning in the reader's mind! This, my friends, is the ultimate never-ending story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Much more than a war memoir, April 29, 2003

This review is from: Adjusting Sights (Hardcover)
I read the novel in the Hebrew original -- and marked passages for sharing with friends and family! Using language that can be only described as beautfiul, the book brings us inside the deepest thoughts and fears and feelings of the yeshiva student turned soldier.

Rarely do we get to share the continuing struggles with memory and philosphy of a yeshiva head (the author is currently co-Rosh Yeshiva of the large and well-regarded Yeshivat Birkat Moshe in Maaleh Adumim. For me the most revealing portion of the book was the return to query (challenge?) the Amishonver Rabbi who blessed the author and his best friend on the eve of battle. Like the rest of the book, the section with the Amishonver Rabbi makes no attmpt to tie loose ends toghether. Recommended!

This review is from: Adjusting Sights (Hardcover)
A terriffic account of one man's loss and recovery of his own soul. Haim Sabato provides an inside, in-depth look at the life of an Israeli tanker on the front lines, while describing his inner thoughts and feelings. A must-read for philosophers and military buffs alike Adjusting Sights is a timeless classic. In the book, friends are lost, comradeship is gained, bravery is swept aside and one man's quest for peace begins. Follow Sabato through the 73 Arab- Israeli war from his perspective. Feel every shot from the main gun, hear every clang of spent shells, and reflect in the prayers and thoughts of a lonely soldier.
