Book Description

0415948207 978-0415948203 March 12, 2004
Adlerian Group Counseling and Therapy: Step-by-Step represents a distillation of some of the most significant ideas pertaining to the group work of Alfred Adler and Rudolf Dreikurs. Drs. Manford Sonstegard and James Bitter illustrate the development of a group from its formation to its final stage, giving readers a clear picture of what is important to accomplish at each stage of the group. This book also addresses many practical dimensions of the Adlerian group process, including: forming a group relationship; creating a democratic and accepting climate; conducting psychological assessments; increasing the awareness and insight of group members; translating group insight into action; methods of re-education through encouragement; and building on personal strengths discovered within the group experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Adlerian Group Therapy, July 14, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Adlerian Group Counseling and Therapy: Step-by-Step (Hardcover)
Informative with real-life examples. This book reads very easily unlike a textbook. It's great to read and understand how Sonstegard utilizes Adlerian techniques with a group of high school students. The summaries and explanations give masterful interpretation to what is happening in group. A must read for anyone interested in Adlerian group or even individual therapy!

4.0 out of 5 stars I knew Sonste personally, September 14, 2009
This review is from: Adlerian Group Counseling and Therapy: Step-by-Step (Hardcover)
I knew Sonste personally, so reading the script of a group discussion he held was very close to actually hearing his voice and... having on paper evidence of his seemingly magical ability!

The man was brilliant! and gentle and also great fun!

While we are here on amazon.com, I'll add Sonste was a huge influence on how we raised our children -- we tried living his theories to the max: "Put them all in the same boat" "Take the sail out of their wind" "Mistaken notions" etc. and my grown son (a kid Sonste was proud of!) has a book on sale here STOKING THE FIRE OF DEMOCRACY (Stephen Noble Smith) about the new generation's guide to grassroot's organizing. (We hadn't called it anything fancy like Adlerian psychological interviewing, but my son -- now having grown up with Sonste's influence on our parenting -- is now explaining and giving helpful practical advice about interviewing and connecting with others -- that may in fact be ... quite Adlerian.

I found this book of Sonste's while searching the web to get Sonste's current address to send him a copy of my son's book, but he has passed away. Troubling news, but I feel quite certain that the afterlife will logically be very Adlerianesque!

um, this book is good in learning how to do this kind of discussion -- I guess -- but for parenting tips, I love Sonste's other books better.

Offerings from Aunt Jane Smith, living in WV and working with Sonste (1979-89) and then correspondent thereafter when he moved across the pond...

The book was a gift for a friend, an adjunct professor of counseling psychology for Marshall University. She was very pleased with it, and will use it as a reference in her work.
