I use this mostly for making yogurt. I like it because it can be hooked over the edge of the pot. The adjustable red marker makes it easy to see where the temp should be without having to figure out what the temp increments are on the dial. The last time I used it, I accidentally grabbed a bigger pot. With only 2" of the tip of the thermometer in the milk, it didn't accurately measure the temp.

The first time I used this thing, it failed me. I was making fudge, and the recipe stated I needed to stir until it reached a temperature of 234 F. I set the red arrow to about where that temperature was and stuck the probe into the mixture. It did fine until it reached 200, at which point it stopped, stayed at 200 for several minutes, then started to decrease in temperature despite the mixture continuing to boil away. As a result, I was forced to guess - which is what I did not want to do and why I got the thermometer in the first place - and my fudge didn't turn out.
Testing it again, just with a boiling tea kettle of water, it should have registered 212, but again stopped at 200 and then crept back down.

I bought this product for my husband for Christmas. He makes homemade peanut brittle during the holidays. His old thermometer gave out on us and this one was as close to the old one I could find. Its very accurate. The clip hold very well. the numbers are very easy to read. I would recommend this product to anyone who makes all kinds of candies.

I burned my candy the first time round but my daughter was monitoring the temp when it happened. On my second attempt, I watched the temp myself. Funnily enough, the candy just about started browning on one edge and the temp did not rise much over 225 degrees when this happened. Luckily I did my research beforehand and put a few drops of the boiling candy in water to test its doneness.... and realised the candy was ready, but the thermometer never gave me a reading of 300 degrees. Maybe its my luck that this thermometer was defective, but I cannot recommend this product.

Don't waste your time on this thermometer. My instant read thermometer that's very accurate and calibrated showed oil at over 300 degrees and this fry thermometer was barely over 200. I dropped my fries in the pot and they went crazy frying, oil must have been 375+. I wouldn't recommend this for frying, let along candy-making where temperatures have to be even more precise.

I bought this as a candy thermometer, but the numbers are in fifty degree increments. The slashes between are difficult for me to see, and don't relate at all to the important temperatures in candy making. I do like the angled attahment that allows the thermometer to rest on the edge of the pan used. In my opinion, the only feature that allows it to be described as a candy thermometer is the high temperatures it records.

If I had known the soft ball, hard ball temps would be difficult to ascertain; I would not have purchased the product.

I bought two of these to use in some Ugly Drum Smokers I am building. They have a nice large dial that I can see from my lawn chair. The red marker is handy to set on your target temperature. The stem of these thermometers is thicker than other 12" thermometers that I have used in these smokers. it is .193" diameter vs the standard .161 diameter stem that you usually get. The temp is accurate as checked with boiling water. So far a good value.

I use this thermometer to make yogurt and it works wonderfully. After purchasing several inexpensive thermometers that weren't accurate this one seems to be right on target. Perfect yogurt! The red marker on the side of the dial is handy to set so that you can tell when you are getting close to the desired temperature. I wish it connected visually with the temperature markings. The markings are very small and it can be difficult to read.
