Acrobat 11 is must have software for anyone who uses their computer to conduct business. I've been using Acrobat since version 5 in 2003. I've upgraded over the years to version 7, 9, 10, and now 11. Going from version 9 to 10 required a tutorial (I subscribe to Lynda.com), but if you are already using version 10, moving to release 11 is easy.

I've had a love/hate relationship with Acrobat over the years. I've gone off the reservation a couple of times and tried 3rd party products that did some particular task better than Acrobat, but there is no substitute for the real thing. The only 3rd party program I've retained is PDF Unlocker from SysTools. The unlocker tool is not perfect and won't unlock everything, but it has gotten me around some obstacles.

Version 11 is a must have upgrade because of the improvements to the editing capability. Acrobat is not an editing program, so it is often best to go back to the authoring program if you have access and the time, but I typically don't have either. The typewriter tool in earlier versions was better than nothing, but clunky, awkward, and limited. Text created with the old typewriter tool was actually a comment, so you had to flatten the file to turn it into actual document text. I could go on and on about all the shortcomings of the typewriter tool, but it is gone in Acrobat 11. (The typewriter tool is still available to edit typewriter text created in earlier version, but is not used to create new text in version 11.)

The new text editing tools are so much better and a huge time saver. In prior versions, there was no such thing as multi-line text or paragraphs. If you created a pdf from some other document, the text was broken into individual left justified single lines.

Even with many free and low cost .pdf creators available, ultimately these Acrobat alternatives are all trying to do what Acrobat Professional does, and sometimes the workarounds stop being worth the effort.

My principal uses of Acrobat are:
-importing documents from a scanner
-shift content between Word (and other Office suite applications) and .pdf formats
-a virtual printer for my laptop when traveling
Acrobat does all of these functions nicely. While I'd have to deliberate for a long time on the regular retail pricing, for my purposes the academic license price is worth it,as Acrobat delivers these functions in ways that are reliable, predictable and intuitive.

The price of this version is quite high; you can get yourself a decently performing laptop for what this version costs. Some alternative approaches:
(1) Can you settle for the reduced feature set in the Adobe Acrobat XI Standard? This may be an option...but it will still set you back a couple of Benjamins...
(2) Can you qualify for a deeply discounted academic version? That will make the discount steeper.
(3) Are you already running version X? If so, you can probably stand pat and still do most or all of the things you need to do with .pdf files.

If your answer to all three is "no" and you simply must have the latest version, then press on with this.

Bottom line: big set of features that comes with a price to match...

As a Windows Acrobat user since version 4, I recently upgraded from Acrobat Pro X to Pro XI. I offer this description of my experience -- which refers only to the Pro XI Windows Upgrade -- as perhaps helpful to others (the Windows upgrade is available only through adobe.com and is not for sale on Amazon. Adobe online sales staff tries to get you to buy into their Cloud project).

Be forewarned: Upgrade installation (at least on a Windows computer) may be hazardous to your psychological well-being.

On 2 occasions over a 3-day period, I spent a total of 7.5 hours connected over the Internet with Adobe Tech support (which is free) trying to get the installation working. The first install came up in Norwegian (an unfamiliar language). To get an English-language install, Adobe Tech support agents tried numerous trouble-shooting options, including remote control of my computer on 2 occasions, but it appeared impossible to uninstall Pro XI in order to attempt a re-install. The Microsoft Windows Search Tool Feature blocked the uninstall, even after downloading and executing the Adobe Cleaner Tool. The first Adobe tech finally succeeded in stopping the Microsoft tool from running, but the uninstall and re-install -- while it did come up in English -- resulted in an Adobe PDF Printer function which did not work properly (in troubleshooting, that function had been removed and re-configured over a dozen times).

After 7.5 hours of totally ineffectual tech support, the parting advice that I create a new User Account on my computer (an idea I rejected), and numerous excuses as to why every computer presents innumerable installation challenges, I gave up on Adobe Tech support and its (admittedly fine) product (when it works).

OK, so when you are done paying the ridiculous price for this software you have to register it, fine the first time. Then a few bad things happen. First you get a screen which says "your computers configuration has changed, you must re register" (By the way my computers configuration had NOT changed, and I have only one computer) When you call to register the second time, you wait 45 minutes to talk to a representative and they tell you telephone registration is no longer supported and send you to a web site. After 30 minutes of typing endless numbers and finally get re registered. The re registration process happens twice more in about 30 days. Then a screen pops up which says "you have exceeded that maximum of re registrations, Adobe is disabled. So unless your budget provides for buying new PDF software every 60 days or so, I recommend buying one of the less expensive, more honest products.
