I would advise anyone who's looking for a great tool to enhance their video production to ignore what the first reviewer said. After Effects is an excellent motion graphics and composting tool. Just because he doesn't know how to use it doesn't mean that it's not a good program. And why did he not try the demo before buying? There are so many free tutorials and resources out there for beginning and advanced user to learn the ins and outs of the program. Videocopilot.net is a great example.

After Effects is an awesome tool. Of course, it's not for movie editing - you can get cheaper, simpler programs for that. On the basic level you can do some of the same things that you could with Final Cut, but you can also do much much more.

I've found it very easy to learn. I've never done much anything video before, but I'm using other Adobe software on a daily basis. There are training videos on various web sites out there, and they can be very helpful. I'm not an animator, but I'm familiar with flash animation and its shortcomings. I was floored how much easier things are in AE. I'm still learning the software, just got to camera, and having a blast.
