I'm a fan of Adobe and have been using their products for a long while; Adobe is the standard, period. And, frankly, I was curious why "Dreamweaver" received negative reviews. I've been coding by hand using HTML and CSS and I build my own, and sites for others. I've never used a 'what you see is what you get' program (WYSIWYG), though, and have always been curious about "Dreamweaver". So I recently purchased a "cloud key" and immediately downloaded the program.

The "Dreamweaver" program I downloaded does come with a 'Dreamweaver Developer Center", links to a collection of videos and such, but not a manual, per se, I don't recall that any of the Adobe programs come with manuals. I use Photoshop, Bridge & Lightroom, and, with the help of included files, Adobe resources (vids & such), and books on the subject, managed to learn them all. Dreamweaver isn't any different.

The program has 'help' files, and Adobe has huge amounts of video resources that are easily accessed. But "Dreamweaver" isn't for beginners (definitely not for the uninitiated) Maybe that's the problem. "Dreamweaver" is a sophisticated program and in order for it to work properly and the user to get expected results you must understand the basics. I'd suggest a thorough knowledge of pc/mac operation and at least a rudimentary understanding of Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML), and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). And a learn by video DVD would be especially helpful.

The program downloaded, for me, without difficulty and I've had no problem working with it. "Dreamweaver" ensures accurate coding, viewing of compatibility across different browsers and devices. It's backward compatible and up to date with HTML 5 and CSS 3 and I'm very pleased with the results.

Basically, I'm a fan of Adobe products: they have opened up a new universe of possibilities for creative types. After looking at several simpler products, I bought Dreamweaver because I thought it would allow me to design my website exactly the way I wanted it and to update it whenever I liked.

How to learn to use it? No manual came with DW so I ordered Janine Warner's "Adobe Dreamweaver CS6 for Dummies" right along with the program. The book was helpful but, without knowing any CSS, there were some things I still could not do on my own website. So I bought a couple of books on CSS and worked through them. Now that I understood the whole process I did more work on my website and had a couple of specific questions.

This led me to the "90 days of free technical support" that comes with DW. First, it is very difficult to get through. One day I called and was told that the wait would be 31 minutes. After more than an hour, I hung up. The next time I actually did reach a young woman. She seemed intelligent and willing to help but inexperienced. It took over forty-five minutes, with long pauses on "Hold" to get my first question answered and I was out of time at that point. I called again the next day and got a young man and had much the same experience. Eventually, during one of the long waits, I figured out the answer myself. From what I could gather, these tech support reps knew little or no CSS and had learned DW on their own at These are smart, hard-working young people but the shallowness of their training puts them in a terrible bind when someone like me calls with a non-standard question. In this transaction, both sides are likely to lose.

upgraded from the CS3 web premium line to full product. I've done web development since the 90's, so I'm comfortable with code level and Dreamweaver remains the professional standard much like photoshop is to graphics or excel is to spreadsheets.
I'm impressed with many features, and was quite surprised at the WYSIWYG interface, very new for Dreamweaver. As always, this is a very complicated product with robust features. Here's some specifics.

-industry standard, if you do web development, must have
- easy way to create multi-channel design for table, pc, mobile which is vital today.
- good ability to update when code-level changes, which is new from very old versions
- help links to linda tutorials, which does a good job though i recommend getting a book/ekindle to save headaches
- since it's the standard, excellent help from the web
- easy interface to FTP your files to testing/prod servers as always

- complicated interface, which always happens with robust product but new developers need to know this
- price always an issue, they've corned the market so you're stuck with high prices until a REAL competitor comes in
- never do a product packages with adobe, i had to buy the full product version since i bought this bundled in older version
- web development is complicated, the reference interface didn't seem context-aware to me.
- finding it harder to get to my css code easily, not sure if that will be a consistent issue

update: after using the product a few months, I knocked the rating down to a 3 because of all the buggy feature related to the fluid layout grid feature since it's more of a beta/adobe lab thing than a finished product. I love the concept and I do think it helps get you started, but it's set up to be a fully functioning feature, which is untrue.
