I'm a Flash beginner who is familiar with many other Adobe programs, and I needed to complete a big Flash project in a short amount of time.

This book is very helpful to me when I know when I already know how to approach a problem in a similar program, but not how to do it in Flash. I can easily look it up and it will tell you the main concept in a concise paragraph and steps to follow to get the results. I don't use this book for learning Flash, but mostly to look up information on the fly. I recommend using this book like you would use a dictionary when learning a new language--you would not learn an entire language using a dictionary, but it can be very helpful for looking up the meaning of words. I would say that the contents in this book are best for beginners, but even someone who is at a more advanced level can benefit from "Timesaver" tips or other extra information designed to help speed up the work flow.

My major complaint is that the majority of the ActionScript examples are in ActionScript 2.0. This is a book on Flash CS4, currently the newest version of Flash. I suspect that the majority of the audience using Flash CS4 will want to use ActionScript 3.0 and the book should have been written to accommodate that. According to this book, ActionScript 3.0 example files "are" available on the corresponding website. They're not there yet, but I hope to see them soon.

I have the complete series and have used this series since Flash MX. For all the visual people out there...this is the book for you. Art directors by nature learn visually by doing so when I found this series and reviewed it I knew I had found the right reference book. Easily laid out so that you see each menu for each step of the process. Not a long lengthy text description but a visual step by step execution of the event you wish to achieve. Great for learning the program for the first time of for those who have also worked in them for a long time a great reference for the actions you don't perform often.

For less than twenty bucks, this book has clearly detailed instructions in full color for just about every topic in Flash CS4. I like the fact that instead of an included CD, you download the example files from the perspection website. For the reviewer who said the files aren't there, I sympathize with you. However, all the files are now there, so this isn't a problem now.
Having very little experience with Flash, I am learning pretty easily with this book. Those of you coming from CS3 will still get value, but many of the topics in this book will be old hat for you. This book is not a detailed book on writing Actionscript, and it is not a games programming book. For that, you'll have to look for a book dedicated to the subject. For everyone else, I highly recommend this book.

The only reason you should buy this book is if you have a good understanding of Flash. I was trying to learn this program and it is so confusing. Nothing that walks you through really learning anything. The tutorials are not very clear and I don't know if the authors expect you to know more than you do or it's meant to add to the knowledge and add new tricks? Either way if you are looking for something that will teach you this program, this book is not it!!!
