3.0 out of 5 stars Adobe Framemaker 8.0 Review, April 8, 2009
This review is from: Adobe Framemaker 8.0 [Old Version] (CD-ROM)
If you are new to tech writing, I'd suggest getting this product as it will stand to you in your long-term career development. This is not cheap by any means but if you land a lucrative Framemaker contract, then you will have justified the cost of the product.

Like I said, this is for those who are serious about a career in tech writing, otherwise your better off with products such as Madcap or DITA type applications.

The interface and feature list is not that different than previous versions but is more aligned with other adobe products. You can also download a 'try before you buy' trial version on the adobe site. If you're happy with it, then maybe invest in this powerhouse tech writing application.

Regards,

Ivan

2.0 out of 5 stars Adobe is letting Framemaker rot, July 16, 2008

This review is from: Adobe Framemaker 8.0 [Old Version] (CD-ROM)
I first started using Framemaker on Sun workstations in 1986. For many years there was nothing better. It has a bit of a learning curve because it gets the notion of separating style from content right. Framemaker is still the preferred choice for large projects such as books or documentation projects that require multiple output formats and structured XML.

However it has advanced very little throughout the years. Modern features that you'd expect from using many basic editors are missing. It took until Frame 7.2 for there to be more than one level of undo! However undo is crippled. Frame 8 looses all undo information when ever you save. Even when Frame auto-saves the document it looses the undo information. Worse yet it pops up a dialog box to tell you that during auto-saves. This is unacceptable for a product that costs as much as Framemaker does and is intended for serious work.

Unless you really need to do large projects you should look for other products.
