Adobe GoLive 5.0 Classroom in a Book deftly guides the new user through the intricacies of Web design using Adobe's Web authoring package. The Classroom in a Book series itself has become a standard against which others are judged, and this addition to the series is no exception.
With a CD-ROM containing all of the project and media files, and each of the dozen or so chapters written in a concise and clear manner, the book makes it easy for users new to GoLive to climb the learning curve and gain a high level of proficiency in a relatively short period of time. Most chapters have been updated to showcase the new features of version 5.
There are over 12 chapters covering a range of topics: from application basics and how to preview work in a real Web browser; through the basics of Web design, the use of tables and frames, forms and cascading style sheets; and on to global management of large Web sites. The more experienced Web designer will probably not find much new information here, but an experienced designer new to GoLive will appreciate this resource.
Each chapter ends with a series of review questions and answers, and each chapter builds on the chapters that came before, making the book suitable for a formal training environment as well as users learning on their own. The only drawback is the lack of a demo version of GoLive on the CD. It is available on Adobe's site, but why not save someone the trouble of downloading it?
There are few areas of computer technology as dynamic and competitive as Web design software. Standards are anything but, plug-ins proliferate, and even the core coding language, HTML, is constantly evolving. Designers must maintain a constant state of training and learning, and any software publisher who maintains a solid educational program wins the hearts of their customers. Both of these books cover the latest version of the popular web page creation tool but in different formats. Classroom is a very structured guide for those who want a thorough tutorial. Readers can pace themselves and supplement lessons with project files on the accompanying CD-ROM. Real World, on the other hand, shows intermediate to advanced users how to translate design ideas into "practical expressions of page structure and HTML code." Though not comprehensive, it goes into greater depth than Classroom on the how's and why's of GoLive's features. For the price and broader applicability, buy Real World.

If you need to learn Adobe Golive from scratch, then this book is for you. It covers everything from the basics to the more complex. As usuall the adobe team does a good job at writing a book both for the newbies and the more experienced people. Though, if you already know Adobe Golive 4, many of the things will be the same. My two cents.

I've used this book to teach my college class and found that it created more confusion than helping. While it does explain the tools and how to use them, it never really takes you through building a site from the ground up. For beginners this book was not a good plan. The lessons confused my students a bit. Some of them didn't grasp the idea of using tables as opposed to floating boxes. Some of the steps described in the book also didn't work well when implemented outside of the lessons. I admit that GoLive has many powerful features and can be a great tool for creating and maintaing a website, but as for Classroom in a book, well, I'll be teaching from something else next semester.

I would not necessarily recommend this book to someone breaking into the world of Web Design. While it does cover in depth the wide range of tools in GoLive, it doesn't explain which ones you would want to use when. Classroom in a Book can teach the basics, but the skill of knowing how to design, and what is appropriate compared to what is over the top, or browser incompatible are glossed over.There is still an excellent use of this book. Adobe offers a certification program for most of its programs, including GoLive. The questions that are asked in the Certification are in many cases addressed in the Classroom in a Book. For the user who knows GoLive fairly well and wants certification, this book is essential. The chapters cover those small odds and ends you didn't know GoLive could do. The questions at each chapter end make for a great study guide for the A.C.E.
