Illustrator 8 borrows some key tools from Photoshop: the Layers technology, as well as the actions and navigator palette. This version also improves upon some other features. Once upon a time, for example, working with the pencil tool and your mouse meant that you had to draw a slightly jagged line unless you meticulously tampered with it. Those days are gone--as is the need to adjust the line using handles or points. Another welcome improvement is the Bounding Box Handles, which make resizing simple and allow a specified item to be treated as an object and even to be imported into Microsoft Word.
For those who are familiar with other Adobe products, this software is easy to learn and use. (A warning to those who are making the jump from 6.0: you'll face a significantly reorganized menu structure.) For anyone currently using other graphics software, Illustrator can import from just about every file format, from the most popular for Web images (TIF, GIF, and JPEG) to EPS, PDF, EMF, BMP, CGM, and RTF. With greater flexibility and a more intuitive design, it's clear why Adobe Illustrator continues to set an industry standard. --Jennifer Buckendorff

no longer installable!,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Adobe Illustrator 8.0 for Mac (CD-ROM)
I purchased this with the intention of using it on a Mac, and upon putting it in my new macbook pro I was told it was not installable because it was no longer supported. I am screwed. The seller did not indicate any where that it was no longer usable on present day Macs, and the return policy does not allow for software returns unless damaged, with a 15 percent restocking fee and you pay the shipping. In conclusion, I would say that the product was misrepresented, because it is no longer useable and no information was given next to Mac version, that it only runs on older macs! Sometimes we just get ripped off by people who like to not tell us all the facts before they take our money.

The reason I gave it three stars is that I haven't given it a good enough run as a user and when I do I will write another review and I have a feeling it will be 5 stars then. It is supposed to have added many more features that in the last version would have had to be manually programmed in. The last version was outstanding. It just takes practice to draw the vector curves. A book called "Paths and Curves" helped me. It's 4 a much older version, but the technique is the same.
I called Adobe before purchasing> I have a G4 Powerbook running OSX 10.4.11 Tiger. They insured me it would install. THE KEY IS: THE OLD OS 9 VERSION MUST BE INSTALLED UNDERNEATH AND A PROGRAM CALLED CLASSIC 9 RUNS IT. Otherwise it will say it cannot find the OS 9 system folder AND NOT BE ABLE TO INSTALL. This applies to the old versions of other Adobe programs. Photoshop 5.0 did the same thing and had to fix the issue, before it would install and then the Adobe programs installed like a wiz.
