Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is Illustrator CS6 and who is it for?

A: Adobe Illustrator CS6 is the industry-standard vector graphics software, used worldwide by designers of all types who want to create digital graphics, illustrations, and typography for all kinds of media: print, web, interactive, video, and mobile.

Q: What are vector graphics and why are they important?

A: Vector graphics are one of the two most commonly used graphic formats in design, the other being bitmap (or raster) graphics. Vector graphics, like those created with Illustrator CS6, are resolution independent, which means they can be resized infinitely with no loss of quality. For example, the same logo design created with Illustrator can be used on a business card or an outdoor billboard, always maintaining the accuracy and detail of the original design.

Q:Does Illustrator CS6 still support 32-bit operating systems?

A: Illustrator CS6 supports both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows operating systems, but only supports 64-bit operating systems for Mac OS. The lack of 32-bit support does not affect the majority of Mac computers that use Intel processors. The only Mac users affected by the lack of 32-bit support are those using Intel based Mac computers with Intel Core Duo (single-core) processors.

5.0 out of 5 stars Illustrator CS 6 is very good software May 6, 2013

I'll try to only make statements that will help someone make a sound purchasing decision.

"Illustrator is the most advanced vector based Illustration program available." If you want simple, this fact should scare you. If you want to create vector graphics without limits, this fact should excite you. If you don't know the difference between pixel based and vector based graphics you need to familiarize yourself with those topics (Google 'pixel vs vector') before trying to make a purchasing decision.

"Illustrator is highly specialized for the task of creating graphics, not page layout." If you need a single tool to do both illustration and page layout, for budget or simplicity reasons, Illustrator is probably not your tool. Illustrator's multi-page functionality have actually made a lot of progress lately. I routinely create multi-page documents in Illustrator, often with different sized pages which Illustrator does perhaps better than any other application now. However, you won't be getting table of contents, footnotes, complex tables, GREP styles or other great page layout features that come with InDesign.

"Illustrator is the standard for professional vector based images." This fact means that if a professional graphic designer created a graphic for you there is nearly a 100% chance they used Illustrator. If you are buying an illustration tool for the purposes of editing professional created vector graphics you should buy Illustrator for compatibility reasons. Other software may say they open .eps or .ai files, but there will be problems. If you need to edit graphics created by people on a low or zero budget you could probably just used what they used - a solution that will probably cost a lot less than Illustrator.

1.0 out of 5 stars Intrusive software and poor customer support August 27, 2013
Platform for Display:PC
I have been using Adobe products for a dozen years or so. Products are complex and have a steep learning curve; I'm sure I've never used the products to their full capability. However, the latest version of Illustrator is a pain in the butt to install and customer support is beyond useless. I have a series of machines that because of their location, cannot be connected to the internet. In the past, I simply loaded the software from the CD and provided the S/N to the installation when requested. No big deal, pretty standard industry practice. However, I have been told by Adobe support that all new releases must be on machines that can connect at least once to the internet. I spent a tremendous amount of time explaining to two different Adobe support staff that, regardless of how amazing as it seems to them, I have machines that are not, and cannot, be connected to the internet. They kept insisting that they could help if I let them remote into the computers. Call me paranoid, but I'm not quite ready for someone to remote into my machine from a foreign country just so a piece of software can be installed.

A bit of digging I found that within the license agreement is the 'mandatory software requirement to have an internet connection so Adobe can access your machine and active the software.

Further discussions with Adobe support revealed that in order to install on any PC or Mac not connected to the internet a user must construct a Enterprise Deployment Package. The deployment software is provided as an exception to the software license agreement. There is a 193 page manual for the software needed to build a deployment package. I am wading through the manual now and finding it poorly written, poorly organized, and of marginal value.

5.0 out of 5 stars quite good October 13, 2012
Platform for Display:PC
Not sure why the other reviews are so negative. I've been using CS6 illustrator for the past month and it works fine. The new features are nice and sometimes useful, I like the new photoshop-like color scheme, and the version seems quite stable (has not crashed once). And moreover, unlike other Adobe software that gets much slower with each release (for example, Lightroom), CS6 illustrator seems just as fast as the previous version.

3.0 out of 5 stars Very fast on new computer, some annoying bugs June 23, 2013
Platform for Display:PC
Did a trial version of what this is now part of Creative Cloud. My experience with Illustrator is quite extensive, but I have had problems with not the program, but the tools in the program.

First, the program as 64-bit version (also 32-bit version installed from Adobe's Creative Cloud Application Manager) performs very well. Opens quickly and responsive. It does have a cool dark gray appearance that reminds me of the UI on Premiere Pro and Apple's Final Cut Studio on Mac, for instance. However, the problems in my experience (talking just one day--and have quit on this 'version 17' already) are quite detailed, but not very many.

Most importantly, on a PC (running Windows 8 using the Classic Shell), any document you open or create has a manilla (light yellowish) artboard. That said, the white swatches are not 'white' as you would expect. However, a very pale gray gradient (mesh) applied to a white swatch makes it appear like someone who needs to see the dentist. Ugly. The viewing angle of the computer screen might also affect how it looks, but the whites on that screen were proper, so why then did Adobe do this on the PC version?

The other annoying thing about the program is what started happening in CS5, maybe CS4. (Did not happen in CS3 and earlier.) When you apply a gradient mesh and then select outer points in that shape and reduce the opacity, apply a drop shadow where X and Y are greater than zero. Save the file and open back up. The drop shadow is no longer editable; similar to how you convert text to outlines. Go into Preview and see a box around the object which is the boundary of where the drop shadow 'ended.' It is worse with this newest version. Any object, regardless of effects, will 'flatten' the drop shadows and leave a box in Preview.
