Adobe acknowledges the increasing number of Web-based projects that are available for graphic designers by loading this version of Photoshop with handy new Internet-based features. For simple GIF animations, Photoshop allows you to edit the series of frames in its patented tool, Adobe ImageReady. ImageReady also handles image slicing and JavaScript rollovers.
Adobe's History Palette option also makes corrections to a feature that was previously a source of frustration. In the past, when modifying an image with multiple steps, the user had to save various iterations; Photoshop's Undo option only allowed you to step back through one change. This History Palette conveniently displays each version of your work. In the case of an unfortunate aesthetic decision, the user can retrace his or her steps much more easily, right from the open window.
While the load time for the program is considerable, the multitude of tools, drop-down menus, and guides make it worth the wait. Those who are unfamiliar with Photoshop will be amazed by the creativity it inspires. For those looking for the next new thing, this version of the tool brings timesaving, "how did we live without it?" improvements. --Jennifer Buckendorff
MORE INFORMATION ABOUT ADOBE'S TECHNOLOGY GUARANTEE: Now that Photoshop 6.0 has been announced, those purchasing the full version of Adobe Photoshop 5.5 in the interim --before the release of Photoshop 6.0-- are eligible for what's known in the industry as a Technology Guarantee. This means that once Photoshop 6.0 hits the streets, those who qualify for this Guarantee can call Adobe and receive a Photoshop 6.0 Upgrade, paying only the cost of shipping. Once Photoshop 6.0 starts to ship, the end user must call in to Adobe's fulfillment center themselves and present serial numbers and billing info to redeem their Technology Guarantee.

Still my favorite version...,
By Erica (Massachusetts, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Adobe Photoshop 5.5 (CD-ROM)
For digital art, where images are entirely created in a paint program, Photoshop 5.5 is the absolutely the most efficient and easy-to-use version of Photoshop. The bugaboo of the later versions is the fusion of the Paintbrush and Airbrush tools. It seems like a small change, but those are the tools used the most in digital art and it saves an unbelievable amount of time when you don't have to flip through menus every time you want to change between them. And Imageready 2.0 is a wonderful program if you have to upload your images online for portfolios or archives.

This is the best version out there for combining functionality with learnability and ease of use. Perfect for people who want a photoshop but don't need anything fancy. I've tried versions earlier and later than this, but none were as easy to learn and easy to use as 5.5. Its straight-forward, does what you want, without the frills that can sometimes simply complicate matters.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Adobe Photoshop 5.5 (CD-ROM)
I bought photoshop 5.5 for PC and thought that was what I purchased but then received photoshop for MAC. The next issue was the seller's return policy. He has a re-stocking fee which made returning the software not worth the postal fee nor the refund I would have received. Plus his re-stocking fee is such that he still makes money for this kind of retail sale from Amazon. It does seem likely he is in the business of re-stocking items to make money.
