New Features — Available Only in Photoshop CC

  • All-new Smart Sharpen: Rich textures, crisp edges, and distinct details. All-new Smart Sharpen is the most advanced sharpening technology available today. It analyzes images to maximize clarity and minimize noise and halos, and it lets you fine-tune for high-quality, natural-looking results.
  • Intelligent upsampling: Enlarge a low-res image so it looks great in print, or start with a larger image and blow it up to poster or billboard size. New upsampling preserves detail and sharpness without introducing noise.
  • Camera Shake Reduction: Save shots you thought were lost due to camera motion. Whether your blur was caused by slow shutter speed or a long focal length, Camera Shake Reduction analyzes its trajectory and helps restore sharpness.
  • Real-time image asset generation: Skip the hassle of manual asset slicing and export when designing for screens. As you work, Photoshop CC uses Adobe Generator technology to save tagged layers and layer groups as individual image files in formats you choose, all collected in a single folder.
  • Camera Raw 8 and layer support: Apply Camera Raw edits as a filter to any layer or file inside Photoshop, and then enhance them any way you want. And with new Adobe Camera Raw 8, you get more precise ways to heal images, fix perspective distortions, and create vignettes.
  • Multi-shape and path selection: Get more done in fewer clicks by selecting multiple paths, shapes, and vector masks at once. Even in multilayered documents with lots of paths, you can easily target the path (and any layer) you want right on canvas using a new filter mode.
  • Expanded Smart Object support: Apply Blur Gallery and liquify effects nondestructively thanks to Smart Object support. Your original file stays intact as you add blur effects or push, pull, pucker, or bloat the image or video. Edit or remove the effects at any time — even after saving your file.
  • Enhanced CSS support: Import color swatches directly from HTML, CSS, or SVG to easily match existing web schemes. Generate CSS code for colors and other design elements, like rounded corners, and then copy and paste the code into your web editor to get the exact results you want.
  • Conditional Actions: Put routine processing jobs on autopilot with Conditional Actions. These commands use if/then statements to automatically choose between different actions based on rules you set up.
  • 3D editing and image analysis tools: Work with all the advanced 3D features and image analysis tools previously available only in Photoshop Extended. Live previews are now up to 100x faster and more responsive when you paint on 3D objects and texture maps.

Exclusive Creative Cloud Benefits

  • Ongoing feature updates: You always have access to new features as soon as they’re released. Just download the latest whenever you want.

  • Intuitive video creation: Bring your Photoshop editing skills to your video footage. Make any clip look better using the full range of familiar Photoshop tools, and create movies with an easy-to-use set of video tools. When you’re ready to do more advanced work, edit with Adobe Premiere Pro.

The Mercury Graphics Engine gives you immediate results, and with Smart Object support your blurs are nondestructive.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do I need an Internet connection to use Photoshop CC?

A: All Creative Cloud desktop applications are downloaded directly to your computer. Once Photoshop CC is installed, you won’t need to be connected to the Internet in order to use it. (Downloading the latest updates and using features like Sync Settings requires an Internet connection.)

Q: If I decide to leave Creative Cloud, will I lose access to my files?

A: When you create files with any of the creative apps from Adobe, the files are yours. Adobe doesn’t take any ownership of those files. When you save your files to Creative Cloud, you’ll always have a local copy of them. Even if you cancel your Creative Cloud membership, your files remain on your local hard drive. And you’ll always have access to a free level of membership that provides 2GB of storage for files.

Q: With Photoshop CC, will I be forced to always run the newest version?

A: You will always have access to the latest version, but you won’t be forced to upgrade. You can continue to run whichever version you want until you’re ready to download and install the latest version. You will also have access to older versions of the software to download, starting with CS6.

Q: What are the differences between the Photoshop CC single-app membership and a Creative Cloud complete membership?

A: In addition to all the features of the Photoshop single-app membership, a complete membership also gives you the latest versions of all the other Creative Cloud desktop apps, including Adobe Premiere Pro, InDesign, Adobe Muse, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, and After Effects, as well as Adobe Photoshop Lightroom, Acrobat Pro, and many more. You also get immediate access to new features and products as soon they’re released. Creative Cloud complete membership delivers everything you need to create, collaborate, and publish — all in one place.

Purchasing any product in the CC collection (like Photoshop CC) means you are essentially "renting" the software. If you ever stop paying for it, you have 30 days to convert your work to some other format that can be opened in another program, because after those 30 days you will never again be able to open Photoshop--even to access the files you created while you were subscribed.

This is breaking new ground for software, and not in a good way. I can understand a subscription plan to a point, but in doing it this way, you are effectively "subscribing" to access your own creative work and not just the software. Quit paying the fee, and you lose access (ultimately) to your work and not just the software.

In my opinion, this is a slap in the face of the consumer. There are defenders of CC out there, but really it's hard to say why Adobe could be benefiting users who create hundreds of images with photoshop and then for any number of reasons (loss of job, change of career) can't or don't continue their subscription after several years. Tough luck: Either spend hours converting to another platform, or they lose access to their hard work. There are other comparable formats (photo-paint to name one), but "converting" across platforms like this in many cases will mean totally rebuilding the file layer by layer. So not really a good option if you've built up years of files...and a waste of time if you just want to be able go back and access a file if you need it. Convert them all, subscribe again, or lose access.

Adobe has lost this long-time customer for good.

1.0 out of 5 stars What a joke... February 18, 2014
By Michael

I went here thinking of purchasing an upgrade over my current CS5 and was surprised to notice both here and on the Adobe page that you can ONLY now buy this product as a monthly membership and not as stand alone software in a box. I'm sure it's a good program but I am NOT going to pay a $20.00 membership fee per month to access a program I used to be bale to pay $200 for an upgrade and have forever.

I have no problem with Adobe offering it at a $20.00/fee per month for someone who only needs it temporarily -- that seems like a good way for a revenue stream -- but they should still have the option for you to buy the actual software and OWN IT, as they had for years. I suppose this is way they can avoid the pirating of it or sharing of it between multiple people, but bad solution. Maybe they'll go back to that but renting software? No thanks.

1.0 out of 5 stars Pay for ever January 3, 2014

I have been using photoshop for years. The original price was steep but since older versions work fine for my needs, I have no reason to upgrade. I have only done so a couple of times over the past decade. Well, Adobe just assured that I will never upgrade again because they want to charge you forever. Great deal for them, not for the customer.

1.0 out of 5 stars What were they thinking? April 6, 2014

Adobe Photoshop Creative Cloud is *not* an upgrade to Photoshop CS6. It's an entirely different model of software in which you are permanently beholden to Adobe, required to pay on an ongoing basis in order to continue to have the ability to open content that you created—content that you own. I understand why Adobe likes this model—it brings in more money per customer, at least from the customers who haven't already dumped their products in favor of Pixelmator and other competitors—but it's a lose-lose for consumers.

The only people who don't pay more are corporate customers who upgraded every release cycle. Everybody else typically pays more. Worse, there's no guarantee that the rates won't change. Just wait for a few releases. As soon as enough folks have enough files that depend on the new features added in Creative Cloud releases, you can bet good money that Adobe will jack up the rental price, because at that point, people will have no choice but to pay whatever Adobe demands, or else they'll lose the ability to open all of their files. Would you pay $50 a month for Photoshop? $200 a month? You will. It is only a question of how long Adobe will wait between feeding us the "bait" and pulling the "switch".

That's why anyone with the slightest bit of common sense should absolutely refuse to rent software under all circumstances. If we, the creative community, allow extortionware like Creative Cloud to be successful on a large scale, it will have catastrophic implications for the future of software as we know it, and sadly, I'm not being hyperbolic here. Imagine if every app were extortionware, where if you didn't pay the company huge sums of money, they would shut off your right to access the files you created. I, for one, don't want to live in a world where such abuse is the norm. Yet that's where Adobe is headed.

Just say no to Creative Cloud. It is the only way to protect the very future of computing.

But I just wanted to add one point for people that primarily do work in web design and interface design. There are many great solutions out there that best Photoshop in almost every area. Bohemian Coding's new app Sketch is one serious competitor to Photoshop these days. One of the apps main advantages is that it focuses entirely on web and interface design so you don't have to drudge through all of Photoshops bloat to be able to find the features that you are looking for. This is the way that it always should have worked but Adobe axed several applications that have worked this way (this last year they killed the once great Fireworks and a number of years earlier they discontinued ImageReady.)

Tools are incredibly easy to find in Sketch, no digging through endlessly long menus with endlessly long submenus. The features that you see in Sketch for $80 are roughly the same ones you will see in Photoshop with many features debuting in Sketch first. This is one of those rare products that is both vastly better and vastly cheaper then the competition. I encourage you to search feature comparisons between Photoshop and Sketch. You might find that you will be perfectly happy with an older subscription free version of Photoshop (such as CS6) and then just let Sketch handle all the new web design features. A major upgrade to Sketch has been teased as of 3/22/14 so expect Sketch's few short comings to get ironed out very quickly.

UPDATE: I have been using the new version 3 of Sketch for several weeks now and it is awesome! Version 2 was already very good and they still managed to make version 3 way better. Now includes support for symbols and a very easy and powerful way to export images.
