If your a beginner with Adobe Photoshop elements, this book surpasses any thing that the manual tells you. There are lessons included on a CD DISC included which has you give you hands on work to use as you learn. A great asset for anyone wanting to use the full potential of photoshop elements.

Photoshop Elements 4 "Classroom In A Book" by Adobe is an excellent overview of many of the capabilities of their amazing product and is the logical choice for "newbies" to Photoshop that require knowledge beyond the Users Guide and System Help included with the software. The training includes a CD of photographs and hands-on lessons where you complete editing projects that are both enjoyable and informative. You can even make a photo slide show of the "before and after" effects of the enhancements you make from the lessons to show off your work. Especially important is the fact that the instruction is presented on a step-by-step, "fool-proof" level, making it beneficial to all that invest in this book. Take note that it is limited to providing "a flavor" of Elements 4 capabilities, which definitely starts the wheels tuning in your head. However it lacks many higher level practical applications and tricks of the trade that advanced photographers and digital image editors would benefit from. It also lacks an objective perspective regarding the effectiveness of the various PE4 tools due to the fact that the book is produced by the software manufacturer. After completing and fully absorbing this Adobe training, for those wanting to excel to the next level, I highly recommend Scott Kelby's book "Photoshop Elements 4 for Digital Photographers" and Deke McClelland's book "Photoshop Elements 4 One-on-One".

4.0 out of 5 stars You can do so much with this software!, January 30, 2006
This review is from: Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.0 Classroom in a Book (Paperback)
Though sometimes I find myself lost because the directions, I feel are not very good. I am new to Photoshop and I do not know where all the buttons are, so when the books says, click on the eraser button for example I find myself spending sometime searching for the button because there is no picture of the button. Other than that it has a lot of great ideas and 98% of the time I can recreate what they are doing. Book is very helpful with colored images. I would recommend this book.

Some things that you can do with this software:
Pamaramic - Take several photos and link them together to create a long photo.
Red Eye - Remove Red eye with the easy tool.
Enhance - You can enhance your photos in many ways.
You can add things to your photographs.
You can remove people from the photograph (or add people to it)
You can remove backgrounds or distracting images.
You can clean up someone's face if they have a scratch or blemishes.
You can make your photo look like it is on a canvas.
Slideshow - Create fun slideshows to show your family.

Trust me, there is a lot more you can do! I would recommend this to anyone. There is just so much you can do to make your photos look really good!

4.0 out of 5 stars Loved this book, August 28, 2006

I absolutely loved this book. I have tried many of the self-teach books out there for other products and I have not found one that is as well written and easy to follow as this one. Before I purchased Photo Shop Elements 4.0, I knew nothing....zip.....nada about the program and how it worked. I was so impressed with what you can do with this software and the instructional training manual was excellent. I would highly recommend it for anyone who is new to this product or for anyone who wants to take their photo editing to the next level. It's pretty amazing.

Excellent general overview of PSE 4.0. Orderly, step by step introduction to the features of Elements. It is a great place to start and allows the beginning Elements user to scratch the surface of a powerful program. It will whet the appetite to learn more and to play with the program in order to become more proficient with its many, many features.

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.0 Classroom in a Book (Paperback)
I used Photoshop regularly for my work for many years. Once I was no longer in that field, I still wanted a powerful photo editing program. This was perfect. If you have used Photoshop, this is the same thing, with a few less tools. If you have never used Adobe programs, get a user guide to help you. I bought Elements for a friend with the Elements for Dummies book and he loved it. So keep that in mind.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Way to Get Familiar with Elements 4.0, August 22, 2006

I am still using this manual. So far, I do like it. What I like best are the detailed instructions on the Organizer segment of the program. I find that I am much more adept at keeping track of the pictures I take. I would never have done as well on my own by just "exploring" the program by trial and error. The Classroom book excels here.

You have to be careful when following some of the editing instructions, and occasionally I got a little "muddled" and had to start over. Maybe I was just having some "senior moments." The processes relating to tagging and relocating pictures seemed unecessarily redundant at times.

Nevertheless, it is a valuable manual and succeeds in preparing one for use on a program that is more complex than it seems at first blush. I do recommend it as a good "starter" edition.
