1.0 out of 5 stars A Book for Un-Ambitious Users of Elements
This book covers about 10% of Elements' potential. You will outgorw this book within days of using Elements.

For example, I've learned from reading other books (see bottom of this text) how powerful layers are, whereas this book barely covers thier application.

I'd strongly recommend the following 2 excellent books "Photoshop Elements Solutions" by Mikkel...

Until reading Philip Andrews book, I was ready to give up using my Photoshop Elements imaging software, and go to a more user friendly (perhaps less comprehensive and useful) imaging software program.
But, as a last try to "master" Photoshop Elements, I purchased Mr. Andrew's book. The difference in this book and the manual that is provided with Photoshop elements needs to be experienced to be really appreciated. Phillp Andrews teaches in such a clear, step by step manner that even the more complex aspects of Photoshop Elements are made understandable and fun/rewarding to use. An added and unexpected bonus is Mr. Andrew's sincere interest in working with his customers. I sent him an e-mail with a question regarding layers. He immediately responded with advice that provided an easy solution to my question. This book is "a must" for those who want to use their time to get the most from Element's powerful imaging tools while minimizing the compelxities of the learning processes.

After much research, I decided to buy this book to go along with my new PhotoShop Elements [PSE] and I am glad that I did. Be advised--the manual that comes with PSE is pretty ..., BUT THIS BOOK HAS IT ALL!
Nearly EVERY PAGE has COLOR illustrations! And clear and concise explanations of the many uses for PSE and how to achieve them. The author begins with an illustrated explanation of digital images, how they are made and what factors contribute to quality. Then comes a SENSIBLE PROGRESSION into the delights of PSE. Each well stocked chapter is COLOR CODED on the top edge of the page. (Which I found very helpful. "Now where was that illustration..oh yeah, the purple section.." There are arrows on the illustrations that guide you as well. Midtones? Voila! An arrow points to midtones. Shadow? Bingo! Arrow! Definite instructions on how to obtain a certain enhancement AND the color illustrations work so well together! Every section and chapter is packed FULL of illustrations and instructions. (Remember nearly every page has gorgeous illustrations!)

I'm telling you, it doesn't get much better than this! Or does it?? Oh yes it does!! .... ..... .... .... .... I'm one of those people that has to read AND try a new skill. If you are too, THIS is the BOOK for you! There are even printable lesson plans at the website for the teachers, and great links as well as updates. What did I tell you?? It DOESN'T GET ANY BETTER than this!! Clear, concise explanations, COLOR illustrations, arrows!, diagrams! Circles around important parts of the illustrations AND a website to "practice" with?? I'm telling you, this is THE BOOK!! Buy it and you won't be disappointed. I'm a happy camper.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Book for Beginners, May 29, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Adobe Photoshop Elements: A Visual Introduction to Digital Imaging (Paperback)
What a fantastic book for beginning Adobe Photoshop Elements users. It's thorough without being wordy, detailed without being overwhelming, covers all aspects of the software without losing you in the process. The color illustrations are incredibly helpful, and each topic covered progresses logically through the software. The paper quality is first-class, and the ability to download the exact image files that are illustrated in the book is extremely helpful. I've purchased several books on image editing software in general and Adobe Photoshop Elements in particular, but this is by far the best. If you're a beginner like me, you'll love this book. I highly recommend it!!

4.0 out of 5 stars good to see what you can do---not as reference, April 10, 2002
By
This review is from: Adobe Photoshop Elements: A Visual Introduction to Digital Imaging (Paperback)
I have yet to find a good REFERENCE on Elements. There are only a handful of books, and most of these show some cool things that you can do, but none offer easy to find, step-by-step directions to do these things. This book is no different.

It is the best of the current batch though, in that it has extensive color photos of what you can do. Most other books are black and white. Also, most every feature of Elements is discussed to some degree.

I bought three others before this one. This is the best.

I do think that the upcoming Visual Quick Start Guide to Photoshop Elements from Peachpit will be the best book to meet my reference need.

I got my copy two days ago and it's by far the best I have seen on this topic. While using it at the computer I have learned a lot and I regret that I wasted my time and money on other books. The next time around they should get Andrews to write the book to accompany the software. He knows how to organize and present information in a clear, succinct and useful way.

This is a great book for introducing Photoshop Elements to the new user. Each section is simple to read, and is followed up by a feature summary, which I find particularly helpful. I just wish that all photo software book would better describe the relationship between pixels, resolution and photo size for the new user. This is a particularly tough concept to grasp. This author does explain that there is a difference in resolution among software, printers and scanners, which I never knew.

A great feature of this book is that the author has a website from which you can learn even more and see even more about what he writes.

This book is the best I've found for Elements. I hope he does a new edition for PE2.

I'd strongly recommend the following 2 excellent books "Photoshop Elements Solutions" by Mikkel Aaland (who occasionally appears on Tech TV), and "50 Fast Digitial Photo Techniques" by Gregory Georges.

I have all 3 books, and I find Aaland and Geroges' books a world apart from Andrews' disappointing, beginner-level book (nothing personal). I've also heard very good things about the "WOW" series but I haven't read them personally. Have fun!

I found Philip Andrews profusely illustrated book to be an excellent introduction to utilizing the various enhancement techniques offered by the Adobe Photoshop Elements Software. The real world photographs combinedwith the logical sequence of no-jargon, step-by-step instructions really speeds up the learning process. The paper quality, the printing, and illustrations are all top notch. To carry out the various exercises the photos can be downloaded from the books website. The author quickly responded and rectified by e-mail a downloading broblem I had.

5.0 out of 5 stars Adobe Photoshop Elements, July 6, 2002
This review is from: Adobe Photoshop Elements: A Visual Introduction to Digital Imaging (Paperback)
Want to learn Photoshop Elements and digital manipulation quickly and easily? This excellent book is the answer.
After wasting money on a number of other books on the subject I found Philip Andrews book to be clear concise and straight to the point - complete with a dedicated website featuring images and projects from the book - it has everthing you need. It will prove to be a very useful as an ongoing reference book.

You will not be disappointed with this book - great value at twice the price - I for one will be looking forward to further publications from the same author.

I purchased A Visual Introduction to Digital Imaging, BEFORE purchasing Elements. I wasn't sure if Elements was easy enough for me. The book is so clear and understanding. The quality of the pages are also great. Not some inexpensive paper. I also like the online tutorials. I feel that anyone who is considering purchasing this book, will not be disappointed.
