5.0 out of 5 stars Now CS6 is Ready for Prime Time July 4, 2012
Platform for Display:PC Disc
I purchased the CS6 Extended upgrade as I expected it to work with no severe problems as Adobe upgrades have done so many times in the past. I have been using Adobe Photoshop extensively for ten or fifteen years now, and Extended since it was introduced. I would give every PS edition through CS5 five stars. Because of one specific bug, I can only give CS6 one star as the bug is very severe and affects workflow. Specifically this one bug has two related issues:

Issue 1. There is a window docking bug that currently makes CS6 impossible to use for serious work. Working with two open files is almost next to impossible. One cannot position the one single active window where the user wants it on the screen. It spontaneously snaps back to some varying left hand position. This bug is present in both the 32-bit and 64-bit Photoshop CS6 Extended editions. It has not been not fixed with any of the software updates including the latest software update that I installed this evening. I expected the problem to be fixed by now. I use 64-bit Win-7. As I mentioned, CS5 operates flawlessly, as far as I know, so I depend on CS5 for serious work to avoid dealing with the CS6 window placement problems and its side effects.

Issue 2. Adobe is not interested in bug reports on Photoshop. No bug report forms exist as they exist for other Adobe products.

I nonetheless still use CS6 for experimenting and trying new features on projects where I did not need to reposition windows for work or work with more than one window as eventually the problem will be fixed. At least I hope so, as my CS6 Extended upgrade cost me 400 dollars.

I would recommend users to avoid purchasing Photoshop CS6 until Adobe corrects the window docking problem.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enormously powerful-- but do you need it? November 3, 2013
Platform for Display:PC Download
A note: Please don't downvote this because you don't like Adobe's prices. I didn't set them, but I did spend a long time writing this to help you decide if it's worth it.

My intent here is to answer two questions: why a photographer might want Photoshop, and whether CS6 is preferable to CC. I've used Photoshop since version 4 for photography, retouching, and graphic design. Adobe has updated it ten times since. It's incredibly powerful and stable, and knowledge of it is marketable. But it's expensive and recent decisions by Adobe have complicated the value equation. I can't tell you if Photoshop is worth it, but I can describe what it'll do for you.

If you're a photographer, probably not. You want Lightroom.

In the past five years, almost all of the major editing tools that photographers once used in Photoshop have migrated to Adobe Raw Converter (ACR). The ACR engine is practically an application in itself. It supports all major file types and has every color and tone control you'll ever need, as well as basic content adjustments like cloning and red-eye removal. Lightroom is ACR combined with an organizing database and batch conversion tools. It effectively replaces the former workflow, which was Adobe Bridge (a basic picture organizer), ACR (running as a separate pop-up application with batch capability), and Photoshop (for content adjustments).

I really can't overemphasize how powerful ACR is, even with advanced functions like profiled lens corrections (e.g., CA, distortion, vignetting, perspective). If the content of the photograph is sound, there's rarely any reason to boot Photoshop.

Quite a lot.

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 Stars For The Product / 1 Star For Adobe September 19, 2013
Platform for Display:PC Download
I have had just about every other version of Photoshop since version 4.0 when I purchased a "full" version. Upgrading from one version to the next usually cost between $150 and $200 every 2 to 4 years. I upgraded to CS4 Extended from CS2 for about $400 as I recall. Finally, I upgraded to CS6 for about the same $ in late 2012. In any case, after my initial full version purchase, I never paid the full freight for the product again.

I am very pleased with the product and I am still amazed discovering new features that I never knew there after almost a year. It is very stable. I don't recall anything ever failing because of an issue with the product. It still has a lot of functions which are not the most used-friendly. However, considering all the functionality which is built into the product, I don't think that user-friendliness for all of them will ever be possible. I give Adobe CS6 5 stars for this.

Let me say why I give Adobe itself one star. A few months ago an acquaintance of mine was looking to upgrade from CS3 or CS4 to CS6 in order to get the last Photoshop version with a "perpetual' license at an upgrade price. To his and my surprise, the only way to do that was to purchase a full version at 2 to 3 times the upgrade price. Adobe withdrew all of the Photoshop CS6 upgrade options with the exception of the "academic" versions. In my opinion, that is a hell of a way to treat your existing customer base. (I see that Adobe is now offering a CS5 to CS6 upgrade but at still a steep price.)

I read a previous review from "Attila" extolling the virtues of Photoshop CC. In my opinion, he is either an Adobe employee or a paid Adobe shill. He wrote way more than a typical customer like myself would have written.
