4.0 out of 5 stars Proceed, but with some caution March 27, 2012
Format:DVD-ROM

Update (4/23/12):
Subject: Proceed, but with some caution
Rating: 4 stars
-------------------------------------------
Adobe - thank you for the comment and update release. I have since upgraded to 4.1RC. Initially, I did not experience a noticeable performance gain. However, I did find this article posted on your website helpful (Search: 'Lightroom Help / Optimize performance | Lightroom'). After following the recommendations, there was a noticeable increase in performance (after a couple hours of use). The changes I made were: Taking a Backup, Optimizing the Catalog, and Increasing the size of the Camera Raw Cache (from 1GB to 25GB). For testing notes - my catalog has approximately 6,000 images, mostly taken with a Canon 5D MKII. The total catalog size is approximately 600-700MB.

The current performance is still just a tad slower than my version 2 environment, but the current version has gone from being completely intolerable to very workable. In 4-6 hours of usage since the update, I have experienced 1 crash while using Noise Reduction in the Develop module.

Given the downtime I have experienced, in the future I will be waiting for an update release before considering the purchase of a new version. However, I have found two of the new feature considerably useful. The soft proofing, while not replacing the need for a hard proof, has helped me get closer, quicker in a few instances. Also, the ability to selectively edit white balance is an awesome thing. Blending light sources has always been a bit of a challenge for me, but it is a bit easier with this feature. Thank you!

Ryan

Orig Post (3/27/12):
Subject: Don't buy yet...wait until they fix it
Rating: 2 stars

Other reviewers have covered the main problem fairly well. The performance of the new version dragggggggs. It feels like you're trying to walk up a mountain in 3 feet of new snow (without snowshoes).

In my case, I have a dedicated PC for photoediting (Win764bit, i3 dualcore, 8gb ram). This should be plenty of machine. Almost no other software is installed, except for Lightroom and Photomatix Pro.

I upgraded from Lightroom 2 to 4, and I wish I hadn't *Yet*. The new version has great potential, but I advise not purchasing or installing until adobe releases a fix for the MAJOR problem that all of us early adopters (read testers / focus group) are experiencing. Keep an eye out for updates.

Cheers,
Ryan

Format:DVD-ROM|Amazon Verified Purchase
I used LR 3 for a while. I also have Photoshop CS5, and I like the way the two integrate. This integration is maintained in LR 4, until you upgrade to version 4.1. At that point, Adobe Camera Raw is updated to a version that Photoshop CS5 no longer supports. So, if you are working on a photo in LR4.1 or LR4.2, and you choose to edit it in Photoshop CS5, you'll get a message about ACR, and how you need to update ACR in Photoshop to be fully compatible...Problem is, you CAN'T update Photoshop CS5 to the latest ACR. So, if you purchase LR4, and you install the version that comes on DVD, this isn't an issue. But if you download the latest version of LR4 (which as of the time I'm writing this is Version 4.2/Camera Raw 7.2), you'll run into this problem.

In MY case, I've switched over to using .DNG files, because they don't require the sidecar files to hold the changes. And because of this, the ACR incompatibility between LR4 and PS CS5 doesn't affect my workflow (but I still get the popup warning message). I only mention this so that casual users like me are aware of this before they upgrade LR. You can also download from Adobe the free conversion tool. I think this tool converts raw files to .dng files, so it doesn't really fix the problem, it just changes your raw files to .dng files. I already work in .dng files, so I didn't use this tool.

Having said all that, I really like the new LR. I like the way the new Highlights and Shadows tools work compared to the old Recovery and Fill Light tools. I especially like how the adjustment brush tool has so many more features than it did before. And it seems to me that the noise reduction is better on the new version of LR. The downside is that LR4 takes longer to process changes... For example, in LR3, I could see sharpening and NR taking place as I moved the sliders. With LR4, it's MUCH slower. Now, I move the slider, and wait for 2-3 count before the changes are rendered. Not a huge deal, and worth it, IMO, for the improvements gained in the way the tools work.

Upgrading users won't see these new tools when editing images from their LR3 catalog unless they reset the image! For example, the new tools I mentioned above won't appear when you're looking at an image from your LR3 catalog...everything will look the same as it did in V3. But once you select 'reset', the tools new to version 4 appear! Of course, you've now reset your image to what it was when you imported it! Your choice...stay with V3 tool palettes and save your existing changes, or reset the image and start over with the LR4 tool palettes! It's up to you which option you choose if you want to change it or not. I didn't know this when I upgraded, and it took me a minute or two to figure it out. I mention this so others would know in advance why their tool palette looks the same as it did before!

I think that upgrading to LR4 offers LR3 users a couple nice new tools, and improvements in noise reduction that come in handy. It's probably worth the price to upgrade, especially if you are not also a Photoshop CS5 user. If you ARE a Photoshop 5 user, it's probably still a worthwhile upgrade, though you may want to consider staying with V4.0 (as opposed to downloading the latest v4 updates) if you are working with RAW files.

2.0 out of 5 stars Wait Until Adobe Fixes It March 21, 2012

Lightroom 4 is much slower than 3.6, so much so that many people are going back to 3.6. Do a search for "Lightroom 4 slow" and you will find many people complaining about this. I would wait until it is fixed before buying it.
