First, most of the people complaining about verification seem to be those who have questionable student/teacher status. It's no surprise they're having issues. If you're not legitimately a STUDENT or a TEACHER, maybe think twice about the student/teacher Edition :P For me it was as easy as putting in my .edu address. Wamo, code emailed to me immediately.

With that out of the way, I'm very much enjoying the upgrades with LR4. I love the additional sliders in developer mode, it really does help me bring out a wider dynamic range. I probably won't use the book function, but whatever. I'm disappointed that they dropped Windows XP support (you can't even install it on an XP computer). My school forces us to use XP on our laptops, and I know a lot of businesses are the same way, so that really sucks.

Anyway, at $79 this is a steal. Adobe -- I'll be honest, this is the first product I've bought from you, and it's because of the aggressive price cut. I'm just an prosumer/hobby photographer, and I'm a student, so I can't afford a $150 program or a $1000+ suite of programs. I'm very happy that you made the price more reasonable for someone like me, and so I showed my support by ordering it as soon as it became available. It was a no brainer at this price. I hope you continue to target my market with these kinds of deals. I can't wait to see what CS6 has to offer.

Hi Tom,

Thanks for the review and describing the process. Following directions and using your qualified school's issued email address is the best way to go to simplify and expedite the process.

I have been using Adobe Lightroom for a few years now and the new Lightroom 4 is amazing! The familiar controls found in LR3 have been reworked to be simpler, faster, and maintain even more image quality. This software is essential for anyone looking to greatly improve the RAW images they've shot. I cannot imagine digital photography without Adobe Lightroom 4, and as an incoming college student, I was able to take full advantage of the Student/Teacher discount!

I know there have been some sore reviewers looking to badmouth the Student & Teacher editions of this software. Those reviewers are looking to get the discount on price without actually being a student or teacher. I would like to share my experience with this purchase to further clarify some possible ambiguities in other reviews.

This is the first program I have bought from Adobe that is a Student & Teacher Edition. After purchase through Amazon, you are warned that you will have to confirm you are enrolled in school in some way, be it an ID or semester grades, a bill from your college or university, or just simply your school email.

After Adobe Lightroom 4 was shipped to me, it said to go to a certain adobe website and enter the serial number in the box to start the verification process. I filled in the boxes on the website with the supplied serial number and my personal information. It does say on the webpage that you should have the appropriate documents on hand during the online process to upload in a JPEG or PDF format to verify your eligibility if need be. The website also stated that supplying your school email would expedite the process. For me, it was as simple as following these steps and entering my school email to instantaneously have the necessary product serial number emailed to me. This serial number is the one you need to actually install and start the program or upgrade from a trial, not the one that comes with the box.

JUST TO CLARIFY

I followed the steps in the Adobe Lightroom 4 package shipped to me
Entered the serial number on their website
Entered my personal info (Name, Address, College/Univeristy info)
Entered my College/University email

and I was done, I activated LR4 using the serial number emailed to me right after completing those online forms. This process could not be any easier! I did not even have to upload a bill or ID from the college, I just gave them my school email and I had the serial number.

I will definitely not hesitate to buy more Student & Teacher edition programs from Adobe!

Update- This was an Adobe issue. Adobe emailed me saying that they "made some changes to my account". I have a serial number now. Adobe responds quickly to live chats and you can copy your conversations for your records. If you try calling them, you will be on hold for a very long time. It was still not worth the $50 I saved for the student version.

Original Comment-I don't know if this is an Adobe issue or an Amazon issue. I spent way too much time trying to register my student version. Adobe kept saying that they could not locate the product code that came with the box. I will be returning it to Amazon and hope to get my money back. It was NOT worth trying to save $50 on the student version.

I do a lot of landscapes and it can be difficult, as an amateur, to get both the sky and foreground exposed properly and to my liking. I use Lightroom for fixing this problem, a little masking and adjusting and I've got the look I want. RAWs have more adjustment options then JPEGs, but I have managed to brighten up a lot of my iPad 3 photos anyway using Lightroom. I'm also a fan of the cataloging that Lightroom does for me too. This is a great option for someone who doesn't need all the bells and whistles of Photoshop and simply needs to process photos to correct color, exposure, contrast, etc.

By the way, the ID verification process was very simple using my .edu email account with the school I attend. Just make sure it is an accredited school that awards at least a two-year degree like the community college that I'm attending. If in doubt, contact Adobe to make sure you qualify like I did before purchasing. They were very helpful!

I may as well have taken $80 and flushed it down the toilet. Adobe's process of requiring official student transcript or card copies of official payment documents will cost me more than if I just paid full price. I will *NEVER* purchase another Adobe product again. I wish I could assign zero or negative stars for this scam of a product.

Update 2/26/2013:

I wish that I could take this one star away. I went to my school, paid money for a certificate with an official stamp from the school verifying my enrollment. They replied back with this:

"Feb 26, 2013 Hand written or hand signed documents (ID cards, registration, report cards, etc.) are not accepted. Please provide further proof of eligibility. Thank you."

Seriously??? Officially signed and stamped document proving enrollment not accepted?

If your not editing your photos out of your DSLR then you are not using a fraction of the power of modern DSLRs. In about 10 minutes I was able to train a 60-year-old how to edit with Lightroom and bring back the detail and quality in images he thought were duds. Forget the crappy branded software that came with your camera, simple photo editing apps, or Photoshop. Lightroom does 99% of what you could ever need to do with photos.

I got this and the only drawback is having to log in and register the crap, till you get your code. Other than that it worked perfectly. It works no problem. Make sure that you have a camera that is supported by this machine for teathered capture if you plan on using teathered capture. My original 5d is not supported. THank God I have a rebel t3i too. But I still can't get it to work.

Even though I haven't taken the time to learn much about this program, all of the photos that I have edited with the "standard" edits (white balance, tone, etc.) look amazing. I will take a class or view more tutorials that focus on the details, but just for basic color corrections, I love it!

AMAZING, and at student pricing couldn't be beat. Just order it and verify with Adobe and the next day I was up and running. I didn't know how much I was missing using only Elements 9. This and CS6 are both the best available by a mile!
