"A useful introduction for those who work with youth who participate in self-injurious behaviors. Serves as a reminder that the most important healing aspect is the therapeutic relationship with the healer." -PsycCRITIQUES Adolescent Self-Injury is unique in offering:

  • Detailed discussion of the complex trauma and its relationship to self-injury
  • Detailed assessment protocol to be used in educational settings
  • A chapter on creating pathways to care in schools and on college campuses

In this truly comprehensive guide, Dr. D'Onofrio approaches the topic of how first-responders treat adolescent self-injury. The book discusses some basics, such as what constitutes self-injury and how to engage an adolescent with these issues. The chapters outline how to recognize, treat, and approach this illness, and incorporate first-person stories from psychologists, teachers, and adolescents themselves.

Editorial Reviews

Review

The number of students who self-injure has indeed grown exponentially. The phenomenon is rapidly becoming one of the most common problems school psychologists must deal with.Donofrio has written a wide-ranging book on the concept, etiologies, and approaches to the accurate diagnosis, understanding, and effective treatment of self-injury..He presents research findings regarding etiologies and treatment approaches in a remarkably jargon-free manner.Extremely useful.Donofrio presents excellent information. After mastering the relevant materials in this book, the school psychologist can be the first person to really hear the students pain and respond effectively, humanely, and competently. -- Communique (Communique )

"A useful introduction for those who work with youth who participate in self-injurious behaviors. The mental health practitioner will perhaps most appreciate the practical section distinguishing between those who engage in suicidal behaviors and those who engage in self-injurious behaviors.Serves as a foundation to understand why individuals may self-injure and as a reminder that the most important healing aspect is the therapeutic relationship with the healer.Recommended as an introductory guide for the seasoned health-care professional who welcomes working with this challenging population." --PsycCRITIQUES (PsycCRITIQUES )

"In summary, the growing problem of adolescent self-injury is one that school psychologists and other school-based professionals are facing in increasing numbers. To date, however, there are few texts available on adolescent self-injury, especially those directed specifically to school personnel. Adolescent Self-Injury: A Comprehensive Guide for Counselors and Health Care Professionals provides a most welcome and useful addition to the professional literature. The text is well-written and provides practical, evidence-based information that should prove highly useful to school psychologists and other professionals responding to and working with adolescents who engage in self-injury." -- School Psychology Quarterly (School Psychology Quarterly )

5.0 out of 5 stars THE Official Book on Self-Injury, September 16, 2007
This review is from: Adolescent Self-Injury: A Comprehensive Guide for Counselors and Health Care Professionals (Hardcover)
There is no better book on the market on the subject of self-injury.

This work provides a well-rounded culmination of explanation, conceptualization, supportive research, and applicable tips for the frontline responder.

D'Onofrio helps us to understand the inner world of the traumatized child, who can later become the self-injuring adolescent. He articulately puts the reader in touch with the pain and complexity of sufferers and the people who surround them. Readers are provided with an opportunity to endure a mere taste of the numbness or "deadness" that often drives self-injurers to inflict pain on themselves.

The later chapters discuss how to best help self-injuring individuals through a firm stance of empathy and clear boundaries combined with useful suggestions and steps to follow so as to best support the needs of the adolescent. D'Onofrio eloquently conveys his profound expertise and understanding to all -- clinicians, parents, as well as novice learners.
