Book Description

Adolescents are among the most sleep deprived populations in our society. This book explores the genesis and development of sleep patterns at this phase of the life span. It examines biological and cultural factors that influence sleep patterns, presents risks associated with lack of sleep, and reveals the effects of environmental factors such as work and school schedules on sleep. This study will appeal to psychologists and sociologists of adolescence who have not yet considered the important role of sleep in the lives of our youth.

Review

"During much of 1990 and 1991, Dr. Carskadon and I served on the National Commission on Sleep Disorder Research, which carried out a Congressionally-mandated study of the role of sleep deprivation and sleep disorders in American society. One of the the areas we examined was whether the facts about sleeping that we have known for more than two decades have actually been integrated into the educational system and the health care system. It was clear that crucial education about sleep need and biological rhythms, and sleep disorders likely to occur in adolescence, was completely absent.... There is an urgent need for researchers and clinicians in the area covered by this volume to cooperate, to arrive at a consensus, and to provide leadership.... Dr. Carskadon is certainly the outstanding leader in this area and she has assembled... leading researchers to produce a very important and long overdue book." from the Foreword by Dr. William C. Dement, Stanford University

This review is from: Adolescent Sleep Patterns: Biological, Social, and Psychological Influences (Hardcover)
This book should be a "must" read for all health care professionals who deal with adolescents. It should be a "must" read for all school adminitrators, teachers, and counsellors. There is a physiologic reason teenagers have trouble falling asleep at night and a physiologic reason they have trouble waking up in the morning. One only wonders how much poor performanc in school, teenage depression, and teenage accidents are due to poor societal understanding of sleep physiology in adolescents. This book addresses these issues.

The book makes the very strong point that teenagers may not have as much control over their sleep patterns, especially when one takes into account the societal pressures of early school start times, after-school activities, after-school work responsibilites, and homework. A novel approach to this problem which results in later high school start times appears to be one very effective solution, which is well presented in this volume

Dr. Carskadon, the world's leading expert on adolescent sleep, has assembled an internationally recognized group of authors in this very informative book. It is extraordinarily well written, consistently edited, and is packed with information that should be valuable to the layman as well as to the sleep professional.

This book should be read by every physician, nurse practitioner, physician's assistant, psychologist, social scientist, school counsellor, school adminitrator, school board member, parent, and teacher in the country.
