Editorial Reviews

Review

“The book offers a solution to the current crisis in delinquency theory that comes to terms with the social-class anomalies found in self-report delinquency studies and with social-control anomalies reported by ethnographers. The authors' theory of delinquency explains the rise in the number of juvenile delinquents from middle-class backgrounds--a statistic largely unaddressed by accepted theories. The relationship between delinquency and the rise of the capitalist system is described. In the process, information helpful in developing effective delinquency prevention programs is presented. Based on four years of fieldwork, the book offers detailed coverage of the relationship between delinquency and political economy, linguistic behavior, and peer networks; and new analytic categories for differentiating between adolescent subcultures.”–Adolescence
